About Eladio Dieste Saint Martin, Ing.

Uruguayan engineer known worldwide for its use of what he called armed ceramics.

Background [edit]

The brick is economical in its production and has offered thousands of years a constructive logic. Throughout history, the Romans had perfected the construction of vaults and domes with this item.

In many societies can be seen different types of domestic buildings using brick for the construction of cisterns, wells and lintels of doors that remain the technique of vaults and domes, where the brick locks one by one, with a simple mortar. Since this technique is made highly resistant surfaces (bridges, retaining walls, lintels) that resist the load from the weight due to its relative mass.

His work [edit]

Dieste's work takes the brick and taken to the extreme lightness in the creation of curved surfaces from a new technology, which he called armed ceramic, domed structures made of brick, steel reinforcement and a minimum of concrete.

This building system design gets thin slices from the combination of brick, iron and mortar, which are built on a mobile formwork. The basis of these surfaces is the design, these structures are capable of withstanding the stresses exerted on them by their shape and not its mass, leading to a lower material requirements.

This type of construction was widely accepted because they allow greater lightness, prefabrication and systematization of the repetition of components, cost-competitive for the market. His work is studied at various universities and took him to receive the honorary title of architect, the only out of having Uruguay [1].

Acknowledgements [edit]

The year 2005 was designated "Eladio Dieste year" by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Princeton University and MIT in Massachusetts, as a way to honor his work [2].

The Lord of the bricks [edit]

In 2006, the 7th and 8th of October was held in Uruguay Heritage Day under the theme "Tradition and Innovation" Eladio Dieste: Lord of the bricks. [3] During the days before the press made a special coverage Dieste on life and his works, spread across the country were visited throughout the weekend. This celebration contributed very effectively to the appreciation and dissemination of the work of Dieste in Uruguay. "What is Eladio Dieste? He has been honored as an architect. He has been honored as the most outstanding engineer in New York. But it's more. With the thin brick built huge vaults whose forms, colors and lights make superb works of art and engineering. " This book is a magazine and a visit, most of the texts are part of previous publications, all of them published abroad, but includes some unpublished writings.
