About Edward Coates, Convict "Eden" 1836

Edward COTES was transported for stealing 12 cheeses along with his accomplice William Watson at the Derby Quarter Sessions on the 5th January 1836, He was sentenced for 7 years and to be transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania).

He was transported on the ship "Eden" which left the port of Portsmouth on the 27th August 1836 and arrived at Hobart on the 22nd December 1836. Age on arrival was 34 years old, his trade being a Ploughman, Maltster and Brewer. He left behind in Lullington, Derbyshire a wife and 5 children.

Edward applied and was granted his application to marry on the 31st August 1847, the convict Harriet MARSHALL who was sentenced to 10 years for stealing and was transported to Tasmania on the ship "Lloyds". They married on the 4th October 1847, at St George's Anglican Church, Battery Point, Hobart.

On the 17th November 1886, Edward passed away at his residence, Balfour-street, Launceston, aged 83 years and was buried the next day (18th November 1886) at Cypress Street Anglican Cemetery.
