Edith Mary Tolkien (née Bratt) (January 21, 1889 – November 29, 1971) was the illegitimate daughter of Frances Bratt and Alfred Frederick Warrilow. Frances used to work as governess at the Warrilow household.
A talented pianist, she was orphaned in 1908. In 1909 she met John Ronald Reul Tolkien to whom she was eventually married in 1916. She was the mother of his four children: John, Michael, Christopher, and Priscilla.
J.R.R. Tolkien sometimes referred to Edith as the Lúthien to his Beren, and these names are inscribed on the grave they share.
