He was graduated from the medical dept. of the University of Pennsylvania in 1836. He attended the University of France, Paris, in 1837, holding an important position in the Paris hospital, at the time the largest and most scientific in the world. He was appointed by President Van Buren special minister extraordinary to Ecuador, South America, 1839, largely because of his proficiency in the Spanish language, a rare accomplishment among politicians of that day. In 1840, he returned to Ohio where he practiced medicine until his death. He married first, May 1838, Oella Stanton, sister of Hon. Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War under Lincoln; she was born May 4, 1822. He married second, April 27, 1856, Helen Rowan, and married third, February 2 1860, Nancy Lowther.
