About Dorothy Birdseye

Dorothy Hawley, dau. of Rev. Thomas Hawley and Abigail Gold, of Ridgefield, was born in Ridgefield, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, on Feb. 27, 1719. She married with Rev. NATHAN BIRDSEYE, son of Joseph Birdseye and Sarah Thompson. He was born Aug. 19, 1714. She died Sept. 21, 1807 in Stratford, Fairfield Co., Conn; he died Jan. 28, 1818. Both buried at Old Congregational Burying Ground, Stratford, Fairfield Co., Conn.

Children were: Joseph (1740-1817, m. Dinah Blakeman), Dorothy (1742-1834, m. John Brooks), Nathan (1744-1832), Hannah (1746-1811, m. Silas Curtiss), Ezra (1749-1832, m. Phebe Curtiss), Hellen (1751-1845, m. Josiah Peck), Thadeus (1753-1800, m. Helen Lewis), Abigail (1755-1827), Ebenezer (1757, m. Eunice Tomlinson), Lucy (1759-1827), John (1761-1839, m. Phebe Coe), and Sarah (1763, m. Rev. Payson Wilson).

Married 69 years, died age 88. Had 12 children, and when her husband died later at age 103, they had 258 descendants of whom 206 were then living per his obituary (said all to be prospering). Had six sons and six daughters, alternating genders each time. 3 kids had died at ages 47, 65 and 77. Graduated from Yale in 1735 and settled as minister at West Haven in 1743 or 1742, for 16 years, then moved to Oronoque for the rest of his life, preaching occasionally and until over age 100. He had kept an "Old Book" of memoranda on family history transcribed by his granddaughter, Maria Lewis Birdseye Curtis, daughter of son Thaddeus, repeated in the Ellen Birdseye Wheaton diary Appendix B. Includes list of all his children and of his grandparents and great grandfather.
