About Dinah "Merrindel" "Trenlah" Emmanuel - Levey, Free Settler "Hercules" 1835
Dinah Davis first married Levy Emanuel on 7 August 1811 at the Great Synagogue in London. The Synagogue Scribes entry notes her Hebrew names as Trenla bat Jacob Irishman married Emanuel Lipman bar Leib Fishman Levy. There is a note as follows: From the Will of Lepy (sic) Emanuel 27 Oct 1824 Prob 11/1690, the names in the Synagogue record appear to be transposed and the person concerned is almost certainly Levy Emanuel, fishmonger of Middlesex Street Whitechapel. His father was, therefore, most probably Leib Fishman rather than Leib Falmouth See GSM 234/07 for the remarriage of his widow Dinah Emanuel.
On 4 December 1825, also at the Great Synagogue, GSM 234/07, the widow Dinah Emanuel Hebrew names Trenlah (Chalitsa) bat Jacob married Isaac bar Moshe Levy. Chalitsa is a ceremony that must be performed before a widow can marry a man who is not the brother of her deceased husband when the marriage was childless, if the brother-in-law(s) grant permission.
The two marriages of Dinah provide the clue to her father. He was sometimes referred to simply by his Hebrew name of Jacob but at other times as Jacob Irishman. This Jacob Irishman whose civil name was John Davis, was a son of David Irishman.
The couple Isaac and Dinah Levy arrived in Australia in 1835 and the spelling of their surname was alternatively Levey.
In the Will of Mary Davis nee Davis made in 1839 – she died in 1840 at Covent Garden – she bequeathed a legacy to Dinah the wife of Isaac Levy, Dinah being the daughter of her brother John Davis of Mason’s Buildings in Newington Causeway, Newington, Surrey.
“I give and bequeath to my brother John Davis of masons Buildings Newington Causeway one hundred pounds or to his present wife Maria Davis in the event of his death.”
“To Dinah Levy wife of Isaac Levy and daughter of the aforesaid John Davis I give and bequeath the sum of one hundred pounds.”
