About Dame Agatha Kyerton

Agatha de Kyrton was the daughter of Sir Roger de Kyrton and Alice (or Alicia) de Thweng. Agatha is believed by most to be the wife of Sir Richard de Molyneux, Lord of Sefton. There are five documented children of this marriage, although some sources list as many as six sons and two daughters.

It will be useful to read the overview on her husband's profile, along with this overview. Not much is found on Agatha's father's family. The name is spelled so many ways - Kyrton and Kyerton are most widely accepted - that research does not get very far. They may have been from Yorkshire or they may have been from Lancashire. Most texts claim her father was from Lardbrooke, Lancashire, but no such town or estate can be found. There is no Landbrook or Lordbrook, either, but there is a Lynbrook in County Kent and a Ladbrook in Warwickshire.

On the other hand, Agatha's mother's family is well-documented. Alice (or Alicia in Latin) de Thweng was the daughter of Marmaduke de Thweng, Lord of Kelton Castle. Sir Marmaduke became first Lord of Thwenge and was summoned to Parliament in 1307 as Baron de Thwenge. Alice became heir when all three brothers died without offspring. Alice's mother was Isabel de Ros, daughter of Sir William de Ros, of Igmanthorpe, Yorkshire.

These children of Sir Richard and Agatha are documented by Dugdale.

  • Sir William Molyneux (this generation appears to have dropped the Norman de prefix) who married twice, four known children
  • Richard Molyneux who founded the Molyneux of Larbreke line
  • Roger Molyneux who founded the Rainhill line.
  • John Molyneux
  • a daughter who married into the Arden line.

An additional daughter, Ellen, described as the eldest child, is not on Dugdale but is documented on other sources as the wife of Richard Bold of Bold Lancashire.
