Biography

A tradition states that Christopher Strout was shipwrecked in this country and stayed here. He was in the fishing business and some of his sons were known as "whale fishermen". Christopher settled in that part of Eastham, Barnsteable, MA which was set off as Truro in 1709. Perhaps he was instrumental in the naming of the new town, Truro, Barnstable, MA. Christopher was from Truro, County Cornwall, England.

He died 1714. Tradition states that he ship wrecked in this country and stayed. He settled in that part of Eastham, Mass. which was later set off as Truro. Sarah Picke petitioned the Barnstable Probate court July 9, 1714 for administration of his estate and married (2) before October, 1716, Joseph Collins of Eastham. "Barnstable Probate court Record", dated October 25, 1716, Sarah Collins late Sarah Strout late of Cape Cod deceased and now wife of Joseph Collins of Eastham. The immigrant came from England.

5. ↑ Historical Note: The Strout family is believed to have lived in the Province Lands (later Provincetown), a fishing preserve and home to "resident squatter fisherman". Local government was essentially non-existent prior to 1714, and a meeting house/church was not erected until 1717, consequently It is unlikely that birth records ever existed for these associated children.

7. ↑ Place Name:Cape Codd as used in the records would refer to the Precinct of Cape Cod established in 1714 by the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Prior to 1714 known as the 'Province Lands', and after 1727 incorporated as Provincetown, the precinct was placed under the jurisdiction of, but was not per se part of, Truro. Truro and Provincetown are nonetheless both commonly given as place of death in genealogies about Christopher.
