Pioneer Passes—Mrs Charlotte Egan

The recent death at Ohutu of Mrs Charlotte Egan, aged 74 years, after a long illness removes from the Taihape district a well-known and highly respected pioneer. Deceased was born in Taradale, Hawkes Bay, and her husband, Mr. John Egan, was employed as a driver by the late Mr. R. T Bailey, of Moawhango, and carted wool and provisions on wagons. It was a common practice for Mr. Egan to sleep under a tarpaulin when on one of his trips. He used to travel over lhe “Gentle Annie’’ on the Taihape/Napier road. The late Mr. Jim Burk and Mr. J. Cruikshanks, like Mr. Egan, were also drivers. Mr. J. Bartosh was engaged on clerical work associated with the cartage of stores, etc.

The late Mrs. Egan was the proprietress of a boardinghouse and post office at Te Moehau Junction. Later Mr. Egan drove a wagon for Gardener and Son’s sawmill at Taoroa. Th e family also lived at Mangaweka lor a while, but most of their lives were spent at Ohotu, where Mr. Egan was employed by the Egmont Box Company.

The late Mrs. Egan was a staunch supporter of St.- Joseph's Catholic Church at Ohotu and of the Ohotu School. She took a keen interest, in all affairs appertaining to the welfare of the community and prominently identified herself with many local activities. She was an extremely popular settler and her passing is deeply and widely regretted. Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father M. B. Doolaghty at St. Mary’s Church, alter which the funeral left for the Taihape cemetery, where the last sad rites were performed. The pall-bearers were Messrs G. and W. Minchin, D. Wind, F. and D. O’Keeffe and W. Bailey. The late Mrs. Egan is survived by her two sons and six daughters. The sons are Messrs Vincent and Clarence Egan, of Auckland. The daughters are Mesdames E. Minchin (Auckland), V Fazakerley (Ohotu), S. Wind (Ohotu), D. Quayle (Paeroa), B. Corney (Bulls) and M. Waring (Paeroa).
