About Charles G. Steelman, Sr.
- From Creson Family, By Frances H. Casstevens, July 1988
According to Mrs. Ellis, her grandmother, Jane Atwood Royal, accompanied her mother (Mary "Polly" Steelman) on a trip from Ashe County, North Carolina to Yadkin (then Surry) to visit her father Charles Steelman. Mrs. Ellis was told that Charles Steelman lived in a large house with lots of rooms. Baking was done in outdoor ovens. They also made cheese and stored it in hoops. Sand was sprinkled on the floor and the floors were scubbed white and designs were sometimes made in the sand. They had good furniture and mirrors on the walls. Charles Steelman's speech was a little hard to understand, because he probably retained much of the Sweedish dialect. The visitors attended a Quaker meeting. Mrs. Ellis also heard stories of gambling and horse racing, a favorite pastime in the town of Huntsville.

Also I give and bequeath to my five daughters to my eldest Catharine Rutledge one dollar to Ruth Rutledge one dollar to Rachel Wiles one dollar to Jane Reavis one dollar to Polly Atwood one dollar.
