    Catalina Micaela von Habsburg was born on 10 October 1567 at Segovia, Spain. (1) She was the daughter of Felipe II von Habsburg, Rey de España and Elizabeth de Valois, Princesse de France. (1) She married Carlo Emanuele I, Duca di Savoia, son of Emanuele Filiberto, Duca di Savoia and Marguerite de Valois, Duchesse de Berri, on 11 March 1585 at Saragosa, Spain. 

She died on 6 November 1597 at age 30 at Turin, Italy. (1)

Catherine Michelle of Spain (10 October 1567 - 6 November 1597) was the youngest surviving daughter of Philip II of Spain and Elisabeth of Valois; she was also the sister of Isabella Clara Eugenia.

Family

Her paternal grandparents were Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and Isabella of Portugal, her maternal grandparents were Henri II of France and Catherine de' Medici. Catherine Michelle never really knew her mother because Elisabeth died in 1568 when Catherine Michelle was only one year old. Her father went onto marry Catherine Michelle's cousin Anna of Austria. This marriage produced five children; among them were Philip III of Spain and Marie of Spain. Through her father she is a descendent of Isabella of Castile, Ferdinand II of Aragon, Mary of Burgundy and Joanna of Castile.

She married Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy son of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy and Margaret of France, Duchess of Berry, this marriage produced ten children, which included a son and heir for Charles Emmanuel, their children were:

Catherine Michelle died near the end of 1597 while she was in Italy; she had miscarried earlier on in that year. Her father died the following year. Her sister Isabella married Albert VII, Archduke of Austria and later became Governess of the Netherlands.

Catherine Michelle of Spain (Spanish: Catalina Micaela de Austria; 10 October 1567 - 6 November 1597) was a Duchess consort of Savoy who served as Regent of Savoy several times during the absence of her spouse, Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy. As the youngest surviving daughter of Philip II of Spain and Elisabeth of Valois, she was the sister of Isabella Clara Eugenia, Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands.[1]

Catherine Michelle was described as beautiful, intelligent, arrogant and well aware of her high social status. She had a good relationship with her father and exchanged letters with him after her marriage. Charles Emmanuel I suggested the marriage as a way of gaining Spanish support for his plans to expand Savoy on the coast of the then weakened France. The wedding took place in Zaragoza on 11 March 1585 and the couple made their entrance to Turin in Savoy 10 August 1585.

Catherine Michelle was initially unpopular because of her arrogance and attempts to introduce Spanish pomp, ceremony and way of dress to the Court in Turin. However, she soon gained respect because of her political and diplomatic skill, which she used to defend the autonomy of Savoy against Spain.[2] She refused the Spanish offer to install a Spanish garrison in Turin from Milan with the excuse of giving her a life guard.[2] She is reported to have had great influence on Charles Emmanuel I and to have reformed him for the better. She also served as regent several times during the absence of the duke on military campaigns, such as during the Lyon campaign in 1594.[2] Catherine Michelle also benefited cultural life in Savoy, founded many new buildings including an art gallery.

Catalina Micaela de Austria fue la segunda hija del rey Felipe II de España y su tercera esposa Isabel de Valois. Recibió tal nombre en honor a su abuela materna, Catalina de Médicis, y de San Miguel Arcángel, ya que nació en la octava dedicada a este santo. Su hermana mayor fue Isabel Clara Eugenia, a la postre soberana de los Países Bajos.1

Su infancia transcurrió bajo la atenta mirada de su padre y de su cuarta esposa, Ana de Austria, que se convirtió en una auténtica madre para la pequeña. Tras la muerte de ésta, en 1580, Felipe dedicó algo más de su escaso tiempo a sus hijas, permitiendo incluso que trabajaran con él en los asuntos de oficina. El 18 de marzo de 1585 Catalina contrajo matrimonio con Carlos Manuel I de Saboya, duque de Saboya, eligiendo Zaragoza como sede del enlace. Tras la boda y acompañados por Felipe, se trasladó la pareja a Barcelona donde embarcaron rumbo a los Estados del duque en Italia. Nunca más volvió Catalina a ver a su familia, dando a su padre los únicos nietos de los que tuvo noticia por la continua correspondencia mantenida entre ambos, aunque nunca tuvo la oportunidad de conocerlos.

Murió en 1597 a causa de un mal parto a la edad de treinta años. Se dice que su deceso aceleró el fin de su padre, el rey Felipe II.
