About Caspar Melchiorsen Springsteen
GEDCOM Note
Casper, as an infant, removed from Boswyck with his prents to settle at Crippelbush in the town of Brooklyn.
Before 1690, he took up residence in New York City where he had children baptised 1694-1697, and where, in 1694 a permit was issued to Casper Melle to transport soldiers. This record suggestrs he operated a boat commercially, to account for the fact that both his first and his second wife lived in Albanly County. He had established residence before January 1693 in the "Highlands" (then Orange Co, and now Rockland Co, NY), at or near Tappan where his father had purchased lands from the Indians in about 1692, and which Casper is considered to have occupied from time to time until about 1700 when he made permanent settlement in Albany County, as shown by the recorded baptisms of his five children, in the period 1701 - 1709, at Albany and Schenectady. In 1707, Casper Spsringsteen was recorded as a "miller" at Schenectady. It is thought he may have taken up that trade as a young man, while living on the waters of Wallabout Creek at Crippelbush. His cousin, Casper Jokannes Springsteen owned and operated a grist mill at nearby Bushwick before he removed to Orange County.
