Caradoc of Dumnonia

Notes: His Grace Duke Caradocus (middle Welsh: Karadawc), according to Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia regum Britanniae, a pseudohistorical account of the kings of the Britons, was the Duke of Cornwall under the reign of HIM Emperor Octavius, who became King of Cornwall and died during HIM Emperor Magnus Maximus' reign. His Grace Duke Caradocus was the Duke of Cornwall during the reign of HIM Emperor Octavius. It was he who suggested to HIM Emperor Octavius that he should wed his daughter to HIM Emperor Maximus and unite Britain with Rome through that union. When HIM Emperor Octavius agreed to the idea, His Grace Duke Caradocus sent out his son, Mauricius, to Rome as to deliver the message to HIM Emperor Maximus. Conan Meriadoc, the king's nephew, did not approve and nearly attacked HIM Emperor Maximus when he landed near Southampton. Only when His Grace Duke Caradocus arrived was peace restored. They dispersed, and HIM Emperor Octavius handed HIM Emperor Maximus the kingship and retired, as His Grace Duke Caradocus rallied behind HIM Emperor Maximus. Five years after HIM Emperor Maximus became king of Britain, he left the country to ravage the land of Gaul, and Monmouth says that HIM Emperor Maximus had left governance of his kingdom to His Grace Duke Caradocus' brother, HRM King Dionotus, whom he calls the King of Cornwall, "who had succeeded his brothe, His Grace Duke Caradoc, in that kingdom." Monmouth varies his use of the terms "duke" ("dux") and "king" ("rex") of Cornwall, even for the same person (e.g. Cador), but his account consistently presents Caradocus as ruler of Cornwall under HIM Emperor Octavius and then HIM Emperor Maximus, who died within the first five years of the latter's reign.
