Not the same as Capt. William Gray, of Old Rappahonnock County who married a different Elizabeth.
Children of THOMAS GRAY and his 4th wife are:
8. vi. WILLIAM5 GRAY, SR., CAPTAIN, b. Bet. 1648 - 1649, James City Co., Virginia; d. Bef. 18 Nov 1719, Surry Co., Virginia.
- He signed a will on 3 Jun 1719 in Surry Co. Virginia. proved 18 November 1719, Surry County, Virginia. Left legacies to his sons, William, Robert, Joseph, and Thomas Gray. To Gilbert, his son and to daughters Mary Gray, Priscilla Gray, and Faith Ruffin, and to his grandchildren Wm ANDREWS, Elizabeth Edwards, William Gray, and William Ruffin.
He was married to Elizabeth JARRETT (daughter of Richard JARRETT and Margery) in 1673 in Surry Co. Virginia. surry co B 2 p 33 Elizabeth JARRETT was born about 1658 in Surry Co. Virginia. She died about 1714 in Surry Co. Virginia. Guardian is Robert castle of children. He may have married Elizabeth as 2nd husband.
Capt. William GRAY and Elizabeth JARRETT had the following children:

Notes on the will
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/collaborate/L89B-42M
- Responding to ... - This is a misreading/misinterpretation of the will.
- 1) There is zero evidence to indicate that Gilbert is the oldest son. Just making him the executor does not make him the oldest son. Often that indicated that he was the oldest unmarried adult son still living at home. In fact, tithable records (where men would be tithed for any man over 16 in your house) starting in 1693 show the oldest child is William Jr., then the second oldest son is John who dies before his father's will and leaves a will of his own (1708) but no children. In John Gray's will, he mentions his sister Lydia and brothers Thomas and Gilbert. He also names his father, William Gray, as the executor of the estate. While Gilbert is named in William Gray's will, Lydia and Thomas appear to be deceased by then.
- 2) In the item "Fifthly" It states that if Gilbert Gray dies without an heir then the land left to him in this will "Shall be equally divided between MY SON WILLIAM GRAY'S FOUR SONS: William Gray, Robert Gray, Joseph Gray and Thomas Gray" This very clearly indicates that these 4 men are the GRANDSONS of the William Gray who married Elizabeth Jarrett and died in 1719.
- So, from this will we know that the children of William Gray who died in 1719 AND are still living in 1719 are William Gray, Gilbert Gray, Mary Gray, Faith Gray Ruffin and Priscilla Gray. It appears that the children of William Gray that died BEFORE his will in 1719 are John Gray, Thomas Gray, a daughter who married an Andrews and was the mother of grandson William Andrews mentioned in the will, a daughter who married an Edwards and was the mother of the granddaughter Elizabeth Edwards mentioned in the will, and Lydia Gray who was mentioned in the will of her brother John and who died before 1719.
- Without more information it is impossible to tell if Lydia could have been married to the above -Andrews or -Edwards.
- I encourage you to read the section on Thomas Gray on Ancestry here: https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/48287/images/South... where Bodie goes back and uses multiple colonial records including tithables to try and right some of the incorrect information in earlier works.
Comments
- The family tree gets rather confusing with him. Several sources listed his date of death as 6/16/1679. This would have meant that he died at the age of 18 and having fathered 10 children. His marriage date is listed as 1682, further leading me to conclude that the 1679 date is inaccurate. I found another source listed his date of death as 1719.
- There is also some confusion as to whether he married Elizabeth Jarret of Mary Foster. Most sources list his wife as Elizabeth and I found another source listing Mary Foster as his mother. I'm wondering if someone got them confused.
- Then there is the confusion as to whether his father is Francis Foster or Thomas Foster. Still researching that one. Okay, figured it out. Francis is his father, Thomas is his grandfather. Whew! Are we back to Europe yet?
Origins
According to "Historical Southern Families," Vol. XVII (available for viewing at VA State library in Richmond), Thomas Gray, Sr, ancient planter of Surry County, VA was married four times:
- first to Anis or Avis Valentine, children Joan Gray (b.1618) and William Gray (b. 1621 and died as a young man/older teen);
- second to Margaret ____ (no children listed
- third to Rebecca _____, children Thomas Gray (b. 1625), Rebecca Gray (b. 1628), and Francis Gray (b. 1630);
- and fourth, to unknown wife who mothered William Gray (YES - a different one, b. 1648), John Gray (b. 1651), and Thomas Gray (YES - also a different one, b. 1652). There are many records indicating this at the State Library
