About Capt. Thomas Smith, of Rockingham County

A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA. DAR Ancestors # A208772


Capt Thomas Smith was the father of Capt Drury Smith, and four other children. And is believed to be the son of John Smith, of Virginia. He served in the Virginia Militia, beginning in 1777, and fought a pivotal battle of the Revolutionary War; at Guilford Courthouse: March 15, 1781.

Both father and son, were recognized for their patriotism, at different times during the war.

According to the will of Thomas Smith, Elizabeth Witt was his only wife, and he wanted her provided for. He left her the house and all of its contents for the duration of her natural life. (Woman weren't allowed to legally own real estate, so it was worded in such a way, that his intention was clear.)

Together they raised five children, and were some of the first settlers in Rockingham County.
