He is called Captain John Pickens by his youngest brother William Gabriel Pickens in
his pension application (Appendix No. V). He was a deputy surveyor for the Crown
and many early grants bear his signature. He is also believed to be the surveyor
who ran the "Ancient Boundary Line" which marked the diving line between the
Indian domain and the white lands following a treaty. It is now the county line
between Abbeville and Anderson Counties.
