About Bridget Kingsmill

The widow of FitzGerald married George Raleigh as his second wife and had one daughter: Bridget.

Ancestor of Queen Elizabeth ll and of Elizabeth The Queen Mother (Elizabeth Bowles Lyon)

Family

Bridget Raleigh, daughter of George Raleigh and his second wife, married Sir William Kingsmill, son of Sir John Kingsmill and Constance Goring.

William and his wife Bridget had 14 children. Their marriage would have been in 1553 or 1554, based on a 1553 reference[3] for the Conveyance of the Hampshire and Berkshire lands of John Kyngismyll to his son William, of Sydmonton, Hants., who was shortly to be married to Bryget, sister of Simon Raleygh of Farnborough, Warwickshire. His short, one page will (held by Hampshire Archives[20]) is dated 30 Jan 1586 and was proved in 1596. It names just his wife and his heir/son and executor William.

"Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, Henry VIII, vo. 10, p. 122, which contains a letter (dated 19 Feb. 1535/6) from George RALEGH to Thomas CROMWELL, regarding some income from lands he had in Ireland through this 2nd wife whom he describes as lately dead, naming her first husband as Sir Thomas FITZGARETHE, viz.: "19 Feb. R. O.323. 323. George Ralegh to Cromwell.

I have lately lost my wife, by whom I had 60l. land in cos. Warw. and Glouc., besides 40l. yearly, payable to her out of Ireland of the gift of her first husband, Sir Thos. Fitzgarethe. These have now descended to Sir Jas. Fitzgarethe, brother and heir to Sir Thos. Geffrey. Please write to Sir Jas. that I may have the farm, during his life and mine, of these his lands in Gloucester and Warwick, of the yearly value of 60l. 4s. 3d.

Note this appears to indicate that daughter Bridget may not be the daughter of Jane Connesby?

Sendrince Charles, Prince of Wales, Edinburgh, 1977, Paget, Gerald, Reference: M 7098, as the source. Her parents are given as George RALEGH (will dated 2 Apr. 1546), of Thornburgh, Warws., and his wife Jane CONINGSBY.
    • In the Visitation of Warwickshire (1619), however, pp. 76-77 (pedigree of RALEIGH), George RALEIGH is said to have married three times. http://www.archive.org/stream/visitationcount01britgoog His first wife was Jane daughter of William CONNYSBY, of Aldenha' Kt, by whom he had numerous progeny, but not BRIDGET. It was by his second wife who is described as "widow of Fitz Gerrard", by whom he had issue, one child, "Bridget ux. William KINGMILL." Finally, George RALEIGH's third wife was Anne, daughter of ...ERNELEY. (this is where my interest first arose because I am tracing all references to ERNELEY or ERNLE and vars.)
