According to Mark Thomas Pina, when Bernardo Sciortino's father Giovan Battista Sciortino was a guard for an estate in Bagheria, Giovan Battista Sciortino's employer was assassinated and he took the blame. Giovan Battista Sciortino changed his name to Santo Abinante and fled to Tunisia and later to the USA. The name Abinante was chosen based on Giovan Battista Sciortino's wife's aunt's husband Francesco Abinante.
