Bartholomew Kempe, was born before 1501; as his mother died in 1501; and he married in 1516; he had a large family and according to hitchin kemp, at the decease of his father in 1526, Bartholomew and wife Anne had 5 sons and a daughter, after which atleast 2 more sons were born.[1]
Bartholomew Kemp married Anne, daughter of John Alleyn, of Bury St. Edmunds, Esq. and Constance, his wife, daughter and heiress of William Gedding, Esq.[1]
The following order of sons is most probable but may have errors as some information can not be verified.[1]
1. Robert, who in time succeeded to the Gissing and Flordon estates.
2. Bartholomew Jr., who settled in London and became founder of the Kempes's of Croydon, and married Barbara Sharp of Cambridgeshire.
3. Anthony who died old and childless in 1612.
4. Edward Kempe, a mercer of London and afterwards of Shorn Kent, who married Mary, daughter of Edmund de Grey, of Merton in Norfolk, Esq.
5. John Kempe, who died a bachelor
6. William Kempe
7. Francis Kempe who settled at Little Hadham; Herts, married Armynell Brooke, dau. of John Brooke, of London, by whom he had a son named Francis Kempe, said to be the same as one of that name settled at Fulham. Sons William and Thomas and perhaps a daughter Dorothy, baptized at St. Dunstan's, in the West, London 30th June 1579. (Note: There is more information on this line in Hitchin-kemps "History of the Kemp and Kempe families of great Britain....etc.)
8. Thomas Kempe, who effects and estates were administered by his brother Edward in 1562.
9. Daughter Elizabeth Kempe, who married Lionel Throckmorton, of Flixton.
Bartholomew Sr., died in 1554. According to Hitchin- Kemp there was an inquisition which mentions not only Gissing and Dalling but also Shimpling as places where he had property.[1]
There is recorded an inquisition at the Record Office, London. In which it is shown Bartholomew to have owned property in Gissing, Dallings, and Shimpling. William and Thomas Poley, Robert, Elizabeth, Dorothy, and Anne Kemp are mentioned therein.[1]
