About Barber Provoost

Barber Provoost

  • born - 1653, New Amsterdam
  • christened - 30 Nov 1653, New Amsterdam
  • died - 1679, New Amsterdam
  • married - Jan Auckesze Van Nuys, 29 Jul 1673. Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, NY

Some sources confuse Barbara and Barber, two different daughters. The first one, born 1647 died young, presumably in or before 1653, year when Barber was born (Barber was baptized 30 November 1653 at BDC). This is probably why she was named Barber.

From Teunis Bergen’s Early Settlers of Kings County N.Y. 1881, P. 230:
Barbara, bp. Aug. 15, 1647, d. young;
Barbara, bp. Nov. 30, 1653, m. Jan Aukersz Van Nuyse;

Barbara Provoost, born at Fort Good Hope, baptized 15 Aug 1647 in New Amsterdam, New Netherland, probably died before 1653.

Barber Provoost, (female), born in New Amsterdam, New Netherland, baptized 30 Nov 1653 in New Amsterdam, New Netherland

“29 July 1673 Jan Ouke married first Barbara Provost (Barber, see above note), baptised 30 November 1653 (BDC), daughter of David Provoost and Maragretta Gillise, daughter of Gillis Jansen Verbrugge. Barbara died 19 January 1678/9 and Jan married 4 April 1680 Eva Janse, daughter of Jan Jacobse of Brooklyn”.

Issue: children of Jan Ouke and Barbara Provoost.

i. Auke Janse who married Catryntje… and was a deacon in Flat1ands DC in 1725. He removed to Raritan, N.J. where his chi1dren were baptised in the Raritan DC. In New Jersey he assumed the name of Oake Van Nuyse

ii. William bp 28 September1679 at New Utrecht DC with his uncle Jacob Auke as witness. He was living in Brooklyn 1715. (KCo)

n.c. Two additional issue are mistakenedly mentioned in the cited source, Jan and Geertje, but it is proven by baptism records that both Jan and Geertje were procreated by the second wife, Evertje.

Source: Untitled lineage of Aucke Janz van Nuys (C. 1621-1698), unknown author, privately printed circa 1950, transcribed by Eligio Gael Rodriguez, May 2016.
