Avis was born on January 12, 1920 to Sig and Elizabeth Skugrud on the homestead in Larslan, Montana. She was educated in Nashua, Montana and graduated high school in 1937. She was active in band and girls' basketball. After graduation, she attended one year of business college. She moved to Redding in 1961 and worked for the Department of Transportation from 1965 until her retirement in 1982. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church for 50 years, a volunteer at Redding Medical Center for 19 years and a member of Allen's Golf Club until age 90. Avis is survived by daughters Sharlyn Corey and Nyla Webb of Redding; son Lyle (Robin) Corey of Dalton Gardens, Idaho; granddaughter Dakota (Brent) and their children Elsa and Ashagre of Ventura, CA; grandson Shea Corey of Dalton Gardens, Idaho; step-grandsons Mitch (Rhonda) Webb and family of Omaha, Nebraska; and Mike (April) Webb and family, Edmonds, Washington. She was preceded in death by brothers Sylvester and Vernon Skugrud and grandson Duane Corey and son-in-law Eddie Webb. Avis loved life, especially the outdoors. She golfed until age 89, worked hard in the vegetable garden and pistachio orchard at the Web-Cor Ranch. She actively supported her children throughout their band and athletic ventures. She then became a booster of all Shasta High School athletics. In love, her children called her ""bleacher butt."" She was famous for her banana cream pies. and Norwegian food. She will be missed by family and many friends. Avis passed away peacefully at home on October 24, 2011 with family at her side. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at St. James Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 12 at 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to Mercy Hospice Care, 1544 Market Street, Redding, California 96001.
