This Arnold or Ernald was one of the last in a long line which started in Normandy. By English counting, found for example in Dugdale,[1] he was Ernald IV, but if we count the generations back in Normandy he is Ernald VII.[2]
He died about 1 April1277.
Arnold died seised of the manor of Barfield in 1277, leaving a son and heir John, who held one knights fee of William Grimbald in Little Houghton and Brafield in 1284. This John died in 1295, his heir was his brother William.[3]
In 1264, Ernald de Bosco held a part of the fee for the manor at Belgrave, Leicestershire, England; from whom it descended to his son John, who held it 1279-1280. [4]
According to Smith he had the following children with his wife Alice, daughter of Henry de Tubney:[2]
Arnold VIII de Bois, who married Ida, but died before his father. According to Smith (p.25) it seems he died in a tournament.
John. 29 June 1253 - 1290) who married Joan.
Master William de Bois, a cleric.
Isabel, who married John Lovel of Titchmarsh
Joan, who married Roger Corbet of Hadleigh in Shropshire.
There was an inquisition made into his land holdings (an IPM) after he died
