ARCHIBALD MURE OF ROWALLAN

Sir William Mure of Rowallan, the author of the Historie of the House of Rowallane, says this of him: "Archibald succeided to Sir Adame his fayr." Historie, page 69

Death

A date and place of death has not been satisfactorily established for Archibald Mure of Rowallan. Sir William Mure of Rowallan, says this of him: "He died in battell against Ingland 1426." However, another William Mure, the 1825 editor of the Historie, cast doubt upon this and suggested that the battle alluded to might have been the Battle of Sark, which took place on 23 October 1488. Historie, page 70 Here it should be noted that the Sark referred to is not Sark in the Channel Islands. It is a river in Dumfriesshire. River Sark

Concerning the actual date of his death, all that can presently be said is this. Archibald Mure of Rowallan was followed by Robert Mure of Rowallan. In 1460 Robert had a precept of sasine for Rowallan in the Sheriffdom of Ayr from the chancery of James III, King of Scots. It seems quite likely, therefore, probable even, that Archibald Mure of Rowallan died in or before 1460. The Exchequer Rolls of Scotland, Volume IX, A.D. 1480-1497, p. 667

Marriage

Archibald Mure of Rowallan married Euphame Kennedy, daughter of the knight of Dunure, ancestor of the marquis of Ailsa, and had a son, named Robert.
