The Jacoway Family History (Preliminary Edition)
Archibald Jacoway
- He was born March 20, 1783.
- He was born April 6, 1783 (according to his tombstone).
- He was of Scottish descent and emigrated to North Carolina from Scotland.
- He was a native of Ireland and moved first to North Carolina.
- (Does anyone know who originally discovered the following information on the Jaque brothers?) Three brothers, named Archibald, User, and Johnathan Jacque (later spelled Jacoway) came to America from France in the early 1730s. Archibald was a plantation owner and trader, User was a magistrate of some kind, while Johnathan was a clergyman, of what denomination no one is certain, since the three branches divide with the Presbyterian, the Baptist, and Methodist. Archibald, perchance with a roving nature, left his brothers.
- The name Jakoway and Jackways are English. Baptismal - "the son of Jaques", variants of the French Jaques. Jackaway is the American version.
- The 1860 census asked where people's parents were born. Archibald's children gave the following answers:
- Benjamin J. Jacoway (died in 1861) no answer
- Joanna Jacoway Stewart, no answer
- Nancy Jacoway Barrier, both parents born in Kentucky
- Rebecca Jacoway Copeland, no answer
- Elizabeth Jacoway Mathews, no answer
- William U. Jacoway, both parents born in North Carolina
- John G. Jacoway, both parents born in North Carolina
- Sally Jacoway Allen, both parents born in North Carolina
- Samuel W. Jacoway (half brother, only two years old when his father died), father born in Kentucky, mother unknown.
- As far as is known, three is no documented proof to any of his supposed birthplaces.
- He is the first known Jacoway. The earliest record with his name on it is his marriage bond of 1804. He always spelled his surname "Jacoway" in every known instance except in the military records concerning his service in the War of 1812, and on his 1813 Kentucky Land Grant, when his name was recorded as Archibald Jackaway. In the 1830 census, his son Benjamin J. Jacoway's name was spelled Jackaway by the census taker and at one time Archibald and in 1840, another son's, John G. Jacoway's, name was spelled Jackoway. It would seem that Archibald and his sons might have pronounced (spelled?) their surname with a "k" in it. These are the only known times when an early-day Jacoway had his surname spelled differently than Jacoway.
- Archibald's parents and the spelling of their surname are unknown. Jacoway may have previouisly been spelled:
- Jaque(s) : Jaque/way(s) : Ja/qua(s) : Ja/quay(s)
- Jacque(s): Jacque/way(s) : Jac/qua(s) : Jac/quay(s)
- Jac/way(s) : Ja/ca/way(s) : Ja/ka/way(s) : Jack/a/way(s)
- Jak/way(s) : Ja/ca/way(s) : Ja/ke/way(s) : Jack/e/way(s)
- Jack/way(s) : --- : Ja/ko/way(s) : Jack/o/way(s)
- Jake/a/way(s) : Jay/ca/way(s) : Jay/ka/way(s) : Ja/co
- --- : Jay/ce/way(s) : Jay/ke/way(s) :
- Jake/o/way(s) : Jay/co/way(s) : Jay/ko/way(s)
- In May 1763, a Reeves Jackaway was mentioned in Augusta County, Virginia records. (This county was heavily populated by Scotch-Irish.)
- In the Revolutionary Army, there was an Allen Jackway of Halifax or Warrenton County, North Carolina, and a Samuel Jackaway (or Jackaways), a James Jackway, and a Samuel Jackway (or Jackways) served in Virginia.
- In Wilkes County, North Carolina (which is the county where Archibald was married in 1804) between 1783 and 1786, Samuel, John, and Mary were bound-out. Their parents were Samuel (who was deceased by 1778) and Elizabeth Jacway, Jakway, or Jackway. In the same county in 1778 or 1779, Elizabeth Jackoway swore that she was pregnant and that the father was Spencer Humpreys. the document called for him to be apprehended and brought forth to answer the charge. It is not known if these two subsequently married each other. Back then, if this woman who had an illegitimate child in 1779 or 1780 were to begin and keep up a promiscuous life, she would probably have been run out of the county before she could have a second illegitimate child three years later (the year when Archibald was born). Elizabeth Jackaway (or Jacway, or Jakway, or Jackway) could have been Archibald's grandmother, aunt, older sister, or cousin.
