Biography

Ann was born in 1818 - in Caithness SCT according to her death certificate, but possibly in Eddrachilles, SCT where her parents apparently farmed. She is the daughter of William McLeod and Jannet Mackay.

She arrived in Australia under the British Bounty System on the 'James Moran', sailing from Lochinver SCT on 21 Oct 1838 with her mother, 2 sisters and brother and arriving in Sydney on 11 Feb 1839. It appears she worked as an assisgned servant in Sydney for about a year before the family reunited and made its way to the Hunter River region, initially working at Bartie's Creek and shortly after as tennant farmers around Bandon Grove and Mt Pleasant on the Williams River above Dungog NSW.

After the death of her mother in Dungog in early 1872, Ann married Joseph Laurie of "Bonnie Doon" near Gloucester NSW,AUS in 1874. She was his second wife and there were no children. Ann was already related to the Lauries through the marriage of her niece to one of Joseph's sons in 1866. Apparently the marriage was not popular with his adult children from the first marriage.

Following Joseph's death in 1880, she moved to Murwillumbah probably to be near her nieces and nephews.

She died of chronic Bright's disease (kidney failure) on 16 Sep 1900 in Murwillumbah NSW, AUS and was buried on 18 Sep 1900 in the Murwillumbah General cemetery. Her niece, Margaret McEachern was the informant for her death. Her estate was split among her relatives in her will, with sisters, nieces and nephews named and even some of the children of nieces and nephews. Margaret's husband, John McEachern was granted probate of her Will, valued at 786 Pounds (mostly her share of her late husband's estate).

Mrs. Laurie, an old resident of the Tweed and formerly of the Williams, passed away at her residence, Murwillumbah, on Sunday night last at the age of 83 years.[1]
