it may be of interest to record some of the facts of the later life of the widowed Anne Crosby. In 1646 or l647, she married the Rev. William Tompson, aa distinguished clergyman in Braintree (now Quincy), Mass., who apparentlly pursued his religious duties with zeal but with little regard for financial gain. Ernest Howard Crosby's record says that in Aug. of 1652 she sold the Crosby house4 with six acres adjoining, and also 147 acres of land in the neighborhood. Mr. Tompson's health was finally undermined 'by melancholia', and he retired from preaching in 1659. He died in 1666, leaving his family in straitened circumstances. In 1668 Anne petitioned the General Court, complaining that moneys due her for his services were witheld. She died in 1675 and was buried in the Quincy churchyard. We have no record of what became of her daughter Ann, her only child by Mr. Tompkins.

1 child.

  • Anne was the daugther of Thomas Brigham Sr. & Isabel Watson. On April 21, 1634 in Holme-on-Spalding-Moor, York County, England she married Simon Crosby. To this union, 3 sons were born. In April 1635, the Simon & Anne and their children embarked on a journey to New England. Evidence suggests that their move was motivated by religious (rather than taxation) concerns. They joined a company of followers of Reverend Thomas Shephard who were leaving their roots in Essex, Yorkshire and Northumberland to establish a new home in America. They set sail on the "Susan and Ellen" from London on April 18, 1635 and concluded the ten-week trans-Atlantic journey ended in Boston in July 1635. Simon held a number of public offices including selectman, constable and surveyor of highways in MA. After the death of her 1st husband, Simon, Anne continued to raise her children in Cambridge for another six years and then married Reverend William Tompson, a widower, and moved to Braintree, Massachusetts where Tompson was minister. The couple had one child of their own, Anne Tompson. In Reverend Tompson's later years, he was "afflicted with melancholia" and did not work for seven years prior to his death in 1666. His disability left his widow in difficult financial circumstances.
