ANDREW HERIOT OF TRABROUN

Andrew Heriot of Trabroun is the son and heir of James Heriot of Trabroun. The name of his mother is not known. He was served as heir to his deceased father in the town and territory of Trabroun on 23 January 1487. NRS: GD157/378

Death

Andrew Heriot of Trabroun died before 13 May 1531, the date upon which the inventory of his moveable goods was given up at Hoprig, near Cockbursnpath in Berwickshire. His connection with Hoprig has not been satisfactorily identified, but at the time of his death he owned the following property there: "30 bolls of sown wheat, reckoned one-third of the corn, price of the boll 12s; also a boll of sown oats, reckoned one-third of the corn, price of the boll 6s 8d; also three chalders of bere in the yard, price of the boll 10s". Inventory of Andrew Heriot of Trabroun His testament does not explicitly say so but it seems likely that he died at Hoprig.

Second Marriage

Andrew Heriot of Trabroun married Marion Cockburn, as his second wife. Heriots of Trabroun: 10 A date for the marriage has not been identified but they were married before 1 February 1527, when she and her husband had a charter for the lands of Arross in Lauderdale. NRS: GD157/400 She survived the death of her husband in 1531 and appears to have given up any interest she may have had in the lands of Trabroun on 26 June 1532, when her husband's grandson took possession. Andrew Heriot of Trabroun appears to have had at least one son, that is the father of his grandson,James Heriot of Trabroun, but his name has not been identified. NRS: GD157/384 It is suggested here, and it is possible, that he was the father of the children who follow, but this should not be regarded as being certain.

Biography Summary for Andrew Heriot of Trabroun

Andrew Heriot, laird of Trabroun, died circa 1 October 1531. His sister or daughter, Agnes, was the mother of George Buchanan (1506-82), the humanist Latin scholar and poet, who was also tutor to Queen Mary and the young James VI (later VI and I). He was succeeded by his grandson, James, who was present at the Reformation parliament in 1560, acted as a negotiator for Mary Queen of Scots before the battle of Carberry in 1567 and was captured fighting for her at Langside in 1568. He was granted a remission in 1578 and died on the 4 October 1580. James was succeeded by his son of the same name, who had married Isobella, daughter of the chancellor Sir Richard Maitland of Lethington (1496-1587), a poet and preserver of early Scots verse, on the 1 October 1560. They had issue (there is mention of a son named Robert), but James granted a charter for the lands of Trabroun to Sir John Hamilton (born 1605), grandson of his sister Elizabeth on the 17 October 1611.
