May 25, 1847, one hundred years ago, my father was discharged from the U.S. Army after serving one year in the war with Mexico. He was discharged at New Orleans, Louisiana, from Co. "K" Alabama, 1st Regiment and 1st Volunteers, commanded by Capt. Cunningham and Col. John R. Coffee.

Father's history is a very interesting one: Born in North Carolina, 1818; spent his early life in Talladega County, Alabama. December 12, 1843, he married a Miss Sarah Branch of Tennessee; to their union fourteen children were born. Moved from Talladega, Alabama, at the close of the Mexican War and sojourned at Tupelo, Mississippi for a few years and then settled in Western Newton County. In 1873, his wife, Sarah Branch Lackey died, and for his second wife, he married Miss Sarah Baughman, and to their union 9 children were born and I was my father's 23rd child.

Father was the owner of a large tract of land which he sold to the government and it is now Cheha State Park in Alabama. He was a farmer, shoemaker, gunsmith, soldier and prize fighter. At one time he was the champion of nine states.

Very few people today remember my father. Judge Moore of Jasper and Mr. Villines of Ponca knew him. During the early settlement of the village of Jasper, father spent much time there. He and his horse and buggy made a spectacular appearance as they entered on the west side of the court house and to his reserved tree he used as a hitching post. Less than 50 souls lived in the little village of Jasper at that time.
