Biography

Alice PAPWORTH was the daughter of William and Lettice PAPWORTH, of Hitchin, Herts (Lettice's maiden name presently unknown, but may have been COWPER). She was born about 1540, and she died around 26 Sep 1607, and was buried at St. Mary's, Hitchin, Herts, on 27 Sep 1607.

Alice was married twice. Her 1st husband was William BROCKET (II) (c. 1528-Sep 1563), son of William BROCKET (I) of Hitchin, Herts. They married circa 1560, and Alice and William BROCKET had 2 sons:

  • 1) William BROCKET (III) (c.1561-c.1621); m: 6 Feb 1594/95, at St. Mary's Hitchin, to Katherine HANSCOMBE (c.19 Jun 1570-aft. 1610; dau. of Matthew HANSCOMBE & Alice ENSAM). They had 7 sons and 2 daughters …
  • 2) Edward BROCKET (c.1562-c.1 Jun 1598); m: bef. 1584, to Parnell TANNER (c.1562-____). They had 1 daughter and 3 sons ….

Alice's 1st husband William BROCKET left a will on 4 Sep 1563, at Hitchin (probated in the Archdeaconry of Huntington on 7 Dec 1563). William mentions wife Alice; minor sons William & Edward; father in law William PAPWORTH (Executor); Edward MARSHALL's 2 minor children; Thomas CHAMBERS's 3 minor children; and property in ?Bankcroft Street & Brigge Street.

This will proves Alice's maiden name as PAPWORTH, proves her father's name as William, and proves that the 21 Nov 1563 marriage of "Alice BROCKET" to George UNDERWOOD is actually MRS. Alice BROCKET, nee PAPWORTH.

Just over 2 months after her 1st husband's death, after what seems to have been a whirlwind courtship, Alice married her 2nd husband George UNDERWOOD, Gentleman of Weston, Herts. They married on 21 Nov 1563, at St. Mary's, Hitchin. It was common that young widows with small children to feed would search out a new husband, who would love and care for her and her children; it seems to be the case that very attractive young widows had no problems whatever with these developments happening very quickly.

Alice and George UNDERWOOD are known to have had 7 sons and 4 daughters:

  • I.) George UNDERWOOD, Jr. (chr: 1 Apr 1565, d: May 1617); m: Jul 1589 at Baldock, to Grace SPURLING (b: c.1570-Baldock, d: 1644; dau. of Henry SPURLING Sr. & Joan GLANFIELD; who m: 2nd, on 28 Dec 1641 to Rev. John HOPKINS of Berkhamstead St. Mary's, Herts). George UNDERWOOD, Jr. inherited the UNDERWOOD lands in Weston, Herts. George Jr. & Grace had 11 known children …
  • II.) William UNDERWOOD (chr: 25 May 1567; )
  • III.) Hugh UNDERWOOD, Esq. (chr: 21 Feb 1568/69; bur: 2 Dec 1635 at St. Mary's, Whittlesey, Cambs.); m: c.1599 to Susan WHETSTONE (b: Nov 1581; chr: 20 Nov 1581 at Cheshunt, Herts., dau. of Francis WHETSTONE, of Peterborough & Katherine _____). Hugh seems to have become a lawyer, although his time at the Inns of Court in London (the law school of the day) has not been entirely determined or proven. Hugh and Susan had at least 2 sons and 4 daughters (according to son Col. William UNDERWOOD's will) …
  • VI.) Lettice UNDERWOOD (chr: 1 Jun 1575-____); m: 1594, All Saints Weston, to Thomas HAWES (c.1575-___).
  • VII.) Edmund UNDERWOOD (b: 9 Feb 1576/77, chr: 10 Feb 1576/77, d: c.11 Jun 1631-Bucklersbury, London, bur: 22 Jun 1631-St. Christopher-Le-Stocks, London), m: 18 Feb 1602 at Weston, to Rose FAIRCLOUGH (b: c. Sep 1581-Fairclough Hall, Weston, Herts, chr: 17 Sep 1581-Goldington, Beds, bur: 18 Dec 1656-St.Christopher-Le-Stocks, London, "in the south Chappell under the great stone"; dau. of John FAIRCLOUGH and Anne SPENCER of the famous SPENCER family, ancestors of Prime Minister Winston CHURCHILL, Lady Diana SPENCER Princess of Wales, and her children the future King William III of England). Rose bore Edmund 15 known children, most of whom lived to adulthood (all christened at St. Stephen Walbrook, London [abbreviated StSW], except where noted) …
  • VIII.) Alice UNDERWOOD (chr: );
  • IX.) Robert UNDERWOOD (chr: 20Mar 1580/81-Weston; d: 23 May 1638, bur: 24 May 1638-St.Stephen Walbrook), m:1) 17 Jan 1604/05 at St.Stephen Walbrook, London, to Dorothy FAIRCLOUGH (b: c. Jul 1586-Fairclough Hall, Weston, Herts, chr: 30 Jul 1586-Goldington, Beds, bur: 8 Jun 1632-St.Stephen Walbrook, London; dau. of John FAIRCLOUGH and Anne SPENCER of the famous SPENCER family). Robert m:2) 30 Nov 1633 in London, to Mary HOBBERT/HUBBART (b: c.1600, dau. of Roger HOBBERT of Northwould, Co. Norfolk), whom it appears he may have divorced c.1637. Robert seems to have m:3) 23 May 1638 at St.Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe, London, to Tymothea WHETSTONE (b: c.1610???, doubtless related in some way to the WHETSTONE family of Walcot Manor of Barnack, Lincs., and Peterborough, Whittlesey, etc.). Robert UNDERWOOD seems to have died on his wedding night to his 3rd wife Tymothea. It would appear that he had no children by his 2nd or 3rd wife. ….
