The parents of Alice Marvin are UNKNOWN. The parents of her husband, John Bouton, are also UNKNOWN.

6/18/2020 edit John Bouton's parents are UNKNOWN, his only wife Alice's surname is UNKNOWN, yet people still try to assign Kellogg. Alice married Matthew Marvin 2nd, as Widow Bouton. If a profile is linked, it should be deleted unless data proved after 1/1/2020. Many people cite the Bouton-Boughton Genealogy by James Bouton and the Seymour genealogy published in NEHGR Vol 72, which had been corrected by the early 1900s.

Evidence needed to support as child of John Kellogg & Alice Kellogg

Family

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-322112

Matthew Marvin's first wife, Elizabeth died around 1642, probably in Hartford. About 1647 at Hartford, Connecticut, he married Alice, the widow of his daughter-in-law's father John Bouton. Matthew and Alice had three children, and Alice brought three Bouton children from her first marriage. There is question as to Alice's maiden name. Some say it was Alice Kellogg, b. March 26, 1600 in Essex, England.

Matthew died at Norwalk, Connecticut, between December 20, 1678, the date he signed his Will, and July 12, 1680, the date the inventory of his estate was taken. [1]

Alice died December 17, 1680.[2][3]

Alice and John Bouton had three children:[4]

  1. John Bouton. Married 1) Abigail Marvin 2) Mary, widow of Jonathan Stevenson
  2. Richard Bouton. Married Ruth Turner.
  3. Bridget Bouton. Married Daniel Kellog.

Matthew and Alice had three children:

  1. Lydia Marvin b. about 1647 in Hartford[5]
  2. Samuel Marvin bp. Feb 6, 1648 in Hartford, Connecticut, Probably died young[6]
  3. Rachel Marvin bp. December 30, 1649 in Hartford, Connecticut d. about 1687 m. Samuel Smith about 1670-1[7] in Norwalk, Connecticut, 5 children]

Given name has also been reported to be Alce.

Date and place of birth have also been (erroneously?) reported to be:

  • March 26, 1600 at Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut
  • 1602 at an unspecified location
  • 1610 in Connecticut (including specifically Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut and Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut)

reportedly arrived at Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut from England in 1637

Date and place of marriage to John Bouton have also been (erroneously?) reported to be 1636 at Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut.

Date and place of marriage to Matthew Marvin have also been (erroneously?) reported to be 1647 in Connecticut.

Date and place of death have also been (erroneously?) reported to be:

  • December 1680 (including specifically December 1, 1680) in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut
  • December 1680 in Hartford?, Hartford County, Connecticut

Disputed Origins

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-322112

There appears to be no solid evidence for the identity of Matthew Marvin's second wife, Alice, the widow of John Bouton. There are theories that she was Alice Kellogg. Due to the lack of proof, Matthew's wife Alice is shown here as Alice Unknown. Please read the discussion that follows to the see the research into the dispute.

Among family historians, the notion that Matthew Marvin's second wife, Alice, had been previously married to John Bouton wasn't known until 1897. The earlier Kellogg association likely springs from a reference in her will to a daughter, Bridget Kellogg. In hindsight, others suppose an early author and/or his correspondents thought Alice might have been the widow or mother of Daniel Kellogg, thus Alice (____) Kellogg or, "Mrs. Alice Kellogg."

It seems highly doubtful there was an Alice Kellogg born "March 26, 1600 in Essex, England." Essex, England is the location given for Matthew Marvin's birth, the date of which is at times written "March 26, 1599/1600."

T. R. Marvin's early 1848 work, the contents of which mostly pertain to the family of Matthew's brother, Reinold, does not mention the name Kellogg.

Seen as born March 26, 1600 in Essex, England to John Kellogg and Alice Pratt though parentage not certain. She is a relation of (probably a niece) immigrant Nathaniel Kellogg.[9][10]

NOTE: Hopkins lists all official acts with the name “Kellogg” and variety spellings from all known English Parish records and reports that the records from the Braintree Parish in Essex prior to 1660 are lost. These would be a likely source to document Alice's birth and parentage.[11]

From “Descendants of Reinold and Matthew Marvin of Hartford, Ct., 1638 and 1635 ...” By George Franklin Marvin, William Theophilus Rogers Marvin. Page 296. GoogleBooks

Until quite recently Alice was believed to have been the widow of Kellogg, and following Judd and others who supposed her to be the mother (not the mother-in-law) of Daniel Kellogg, husband of Bridget, she was so called by the compiler of the Marvin Monograph in Fam. Hist, and Gens. Various documents have since been found showing she was the widow of a John Bouton (previously unknown to genealogists) by whom she had issue, three of them, John, Bridget and Richard, living when she married Matthew. The twenty pounds, called in Matthew's will "her true and proper estate," and the other personal property which she bequeaths, came from her first husband. Of those she names, "grandchild Sarah Brinsmead " was a married daughter of Bridget (Bouton) Kellogg; Ruth Bouton, was the posthumous child of Richard and Ruth (TumeyJ Bouton; Rachel Bouton, the daughter of John and Abigail (Marvin) Bouton, and Rachel Smith her own daughter by Matthew. For further information concerning these children see the note following Matthew Marvin's inventory above, from Fairfield Prob. rec., Ill: 59; see also p. 60 of that volume, and for various agreements proving the relationship given, see Fairfield Land Rec, 414 , Fairfield Prob. rec, 11: 1, 16 ti "r" and N. E. Hist. Gen. Reg. for July, 1897.
