About Alice Lake

Alice married first Samuel Holmes. After his death she married William Osborne who had recently come to Gravesend from Newcastle in Delaware and who had lost his first wife Elizabeth Moore. After his death in 1682, in the gravesend Census of 1683 Alice Osborn was noted to be the largest landowner and cattle owner in town with one hundred and fifteen acres of land: three twenty acre farms, two twenty-four acre wood lots and the seven acres bought by Samuel Holmes of James Bowne, twenty-two cows and four or five horses.

Daniel Lake bought her late husband's (Osborn's) estate and in time she married him as her third husband. He was appointed Lieutenant of Gravesend Militia in 1680. He and Alice later moved to Staten Island where he was an influential man of wealth but no ambition for public office. The Daniel Lake house has been preserved there.
