Birth surname has been widely seen as de Doncaster, which is inconsistent with this era. Was it a reference to her location? Most English surnames that began as toponymic styles had the preposition "de" dropped before the 16th century - but not all. There was a de Doncaster family that was apparently seated at Doncaster; perhaps this Alice and her father are members of that family but the family surname had been truncated to Doncaster; one Geni user has reported her birth surname as that. Further research is warranted.

Do not confuse this Alice with her husband's other wife Alice Birdsall.
