About Alexander Resseguie
The following details were compiled by one of his descendants, Jim Resseguie:
Resseguies in America are descendants of Alexander De Resseguier who came to America in 1709. He was born in France but moved to England with his father when he was a child. Soon after arriving in America he married Sarah Bontecou.
Resseguie is the anglisized version of Resseguier and is French in origin.
Alexander De Resseguier was a French Huguenot. He was the first Resseguie to come to America arriving no later than 1709. He came in through New York City. He changed the spelling of the name shortly after arriving. He married Sarah Bontecou in 1709. Sarah was the daughter of Pierre Bontecou of NYC who was also a Huguenot. They Settled in Norwalk Connecticut. They had many children and it's believed that Alexander is the forebearer of most (if not all) Resseguies in America.
Alexander and Sarah were married at New Rochelle's French Church in 1709 by Pastor Daniel Bondet.
What does Resseguie mean in French?
Le scieur de bûches, de long : RESSEGUE, RESSEGUET, RESSEGUIER de ressègo, arresègue = scie.
I used an online translator and it came out this way.
The sawyer of logs, length: RESSEGUE, RESSEGUET, RESSEGUIER of
ressègo, arresègue = saw.
I guess it means a Sawyer or perhaps a lumberjack.
It might explain the Tree in the family crest.
Here was the definition on Ancestry.com
French (Huguenot): variant of southern French Resseguier, an occupational name for a sawyer, from an agent derivative of ressa ‘saw’.
