notes
From History of Dunbar Hume and Dundas from Drummond's Noble British Families, William Pickering, London 1846:
Alexander commanded a body of horse at the battle of Langeide on the Regent's side against Mary in 1568. He got the abbacy of Coldinghame to defray his expenses, and he likewise shared with Hume of Coldingknows the forfeited estates of Lord Home. When Lord Hume was imprisoned in 1571, and was exchanged for Douglas of Drumlanrig, this interchange was sair incontrair, the wilis and mynds of the friends of the said Lord Hume, becaus he being tane it was neuir thair mynd that he suld be relievit; thinking that he being detenit in captivitie thaj mycht be kingis in his boundis, and uptake his lieving at their awne plesour. Diurnal of Cccurrents, p. 230. Whatever attachment there may have been amongst the poorer vassals towards their lords, the heads plundered and preyed upon each other like wild beasts.
