P46. The Northfield Library Company

    The first library in Monroe County was organized in Pittsford at the home of Ezra Patterson where 44 subscribers each paid $1 a share for membership in the library corporation begun in 1803.

    The Northfield Library Company chose Patterson as the first librarian, William Griffin as secretary, and voted that "... any person that shall blot or Creese or Soil any book in any shape or turn done any leaf shall forfeit six cents, and taring of Every Leaf shall be left to the Discretion of the Directors and Every Leaf that shall be tourn out shall forfeit Double the price of the Book."

    Other rules and regulations of the old minute book of 1803-1808 .called for the election of a librarian, secretary, treasurer, three directors and five inspectors of books to continue in office for one-year terms until replaced by the company.

    Mr. Patterson's historic homestead has been torn down, but the minute book lists the initial subscribers as: Ezra Patterson, Nathan Nye, Jared Barker, Noah Norton, William Griffin, Thomas Bilinghurst, Amos Stone, Hutch Patterson, Elihuu Doud, William Agate, Silas Nye, William Acer, Glover Perrin, Ann Bilinghurst, William Bilinghurst, William Acer, Jr., Isaac Stone, Silas Patterson, Simon Stone, Samuel Spafford, John Ray, Desire Parker, Henry Hess, Augustus Griswold, David Farr, Jasiel Farr, Jr., Robert Holland, David Cathcart, Alexander Chubb, Joseph Lunt, Henry E. Dennis and Georgr Parker.

    Among those felled in the pneumonia typhoid epidemic of 1812 were Captain Silas Nye, Major Ezra Patterson, Noah Norton, mr. and Mrs. Alexander Chubb who both died the same day, John Armstrong, Mrs. George Parrot, and Mr. and Mrs. Andrew miller.  Andrew Miller outlived his wife, Hannah, by one day, and knowing that his end was near, made his will the day she died.  With the coming of spring in 1813, the epidemic died down.

    Unlike most of the early settlers heading west to the new lands with only vague prospects for making a success, the Chubbs came with a definite contract for a specific task.

    Oliver Phelps needed roads in his broad holdings.  Roads not only served as an attraction and convenience for settlers, but provided a source of revenue to the Turnpike owner who collected tolls for their use.
