About Albert Williamse Covenhoven

In the 1700's there were many variations of the original name. Gerret Williamse of Brooklyn, a grandon of Gerret Wolphertse, signed "Gerret Counover" in 1702. Well into the twentieth century the Kouwenhovens of Flatlands wrote their name in full but were referred to among themselves and by neighbors as Conovers. In New Jersey, there were many variations. While Cowenhoven and Covenhoven were prominent, we find such spellings as Couenhoven, Kovenhoven and Cr (K) ownover. Three stones in the Conover-Schenck cemetery, Holmdel, New Jersey show John Kouenhoven, Cornelius Conover and Christopher Kovenhoven, son of Cornelius A. Covenhoven! In the late 1700's the use of Conover increased and gradually more and more descendants of Wolphert bore that name.

Descendnts of Wolphert have taken part in every important phase of America's development: giving their lives in ever war; helping expand the frontiers by pushing west into New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois; crossing the Mississippi, the Great Plains, and over the Rockies to the Pacific. Many became leaders in local and national affairs; others in the professions such as education, engineering, law, medicine and religion. Still others were craftsmen, skilled in the various trades, while many became successfull farmers and businessmen.

Albert Covenhoven (M) b. 07 Dec 1676, d. 13 Sep 1748, #343 Pedigree 

     Albert Covenhoven was born on 7 December 1676 at Flatlands, Kings County, New York. He was the son of Willem Gerretse Van Kouwenhoven and Jannetije Pieterse Monfoort. Albert Covenhoven married Neeltje Roelofse Schenck, daughter of Roelof Martense Schenck and Annetje Wyckoff, on 2 October 1701. Albert Covenhoven died on 13 September 1748 at Pleasant Valley, Monmouth County, New Jersey, at age 71. He was buried circa 14 September 1748 at Schenck-Couwenhoven Cemetery, Pleasant Valley, Monmouth County, New Jersey. His estate was probated on 3 October 1748. 
    He was also known as Albert Willemse Van Kouwenhoven. He was also known as Albert Willemse Kouwenhoven. He was also known as Albert Williamse Couwenhoven. He was also known as Albert Van Kouwenhoven. They removed to the vicinity of Freehold, NJ, about 1702. He and his wife were members of the Reformed Dutch Church, Freehold, NJ in 1709. He was a member of the grand jury, Court of Quarter Session held Nov, 1715. His will dated Sep 6, 1748, mentions wife Eleanor and eleven children, but not Neeltje, who predeceased him.
