Being a child prodigy he is said to have played for Tauranga sub-union against Auckland when only 13 years old. When he was 17, in 1897, he was invited to Auckland to play for the Parnell Football Club. Debuting for Auckland the next season, he scored two tries against Hawkes Bay. In 1902 he scored in every game for Auckland and was selected for New Zealand in 1903. His nicknames were 'India Rubber Man' and 'Opai'.
