Biography

Agnes was married at least four times, her first husband was Roger Moore of Bicester by whom she had one son, Thomas, and two daughters Mary, who married Michael Blunt, and Elizabeth who married 1st Gabriel Fowler (d. 1582) and 2nd Sir John Brockett.[1][2]

Following Roger's death in 1552, Agnes next married Thomas Curzon/Curson of Waterperry in Oxfordshire. They had one daughter, another Mary, who married Sir George Fermor. Mary's wardship had been acquired by Agnes's third husband, Michael Wentworth, which he left to Agnes 'my well beloved wife' when he made his Will in 1558.

Agnes married Michael Wentworth about 1556, [3][4] but the marriage was of a short duration as Michael died in October 1558 and was buried at St Margaret's Westminster - "the xxiii day of October was buried at Westminster Master Wentworth, squire and cofferer unto Queen Mary, with ii white branches and ii dozen torches and a 'cot-armur' and a pennon of armes, with a harold {?herald] of armes and iiii dozen of skochyons {?escutcheons] of armes and serten morners [certain mourners] and many of the Queen Mary's servants at his burying at St Margaret's" as recorded in the diary of Henry Machyn. [5]

Agnes's fourth marriage was to Edward Saunders which would have taken place after 30th November 1558 (when probate of the Will of Michael Wentworth was granted). Agnes's second husband, Thomas Curson, and this fourth husband, Edward, were first cousins - Isabel Saunders, the mother of Thomas Curson, was the sister of Edward's father Thomas Saunders.

Following Edward's death in November 1576 [6], Agnes remained a widow until she died in 1588 having made her Will on 27th August 1588 [7] as "Dame Agnes Saunders widow late wife of Sir Edward Saunders knight late Lord Chief Baron of the Queen’s Majesty her Exchequer deceased" [8] in which she made bequests to:

  • her daughter Lady Marie Fermor + her sons Hatton, Robert and George + her daughters Agnes, Katherine, Elizabeth, Jane and Frances
  • her daughter Mary Blunt + her married daughter Katherine Croke wife of John Croke and their son John Croke; + Mary's sons Richard Blunt, Thomas Blunt and Charles Blunt
  • her daughter Dame Elizabeth Brockett + her daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Jane and son by her late husband Gabriel Fowler + her husband Sir John Brockett and their daughter Frances Brockett
  • her servant Ambrose Belson (he was the son of William Belson and Anne Curson; Anne was the daughter of Walter Curson and the sister of Agnes's second husband Thomas Curson).
  • her sister Lyddington + her daughter Agnes Taylor and her son Robert
  • her nephew George Skidmore
  • Hellen Wayneman, who was the daughter of her late husband Michael Wentworth, and her husband John Wayneman
  • her son in law Sir George Fermor
  • her son in law Michael Blunt

Probate of her Will was granted on 9th November 1588 to George Fermor, Michael Blunt and Ambrose Belson.

Research Notes

There are various secondary sources which suggest that the maiden name of Agnes is Hussey/Husye the daughter of John Husye. However, in her Will which she made on 27th August 1588 Agnes requested that she be buried in the chancel of the parish church of Stepney by "my late brother John Maynard".
