About Agda Persdotter
Agda "Caritas" Persdotter
- AGDA PERSDOTTER or Agda i Porten, (d. after 1565), was a Swedish woman, main royal mistress of King Eric XIV of Sweden during his time as a Crown Prince and during the first years of his reign 1560-1565.
Biography
Agda Persdotter is believed to have been the daughter of the wealthy merchant Peder Klementsson, who lived by St Nicolai port in Stockholm and was known as Per i porten, though her parentage has not been confirmed. She was described as a very beautiful woman and was called Caritas. She became the mistress of Eric during his time as a crown prince and is the first of his recorded mistresses, was a center of his court at Kalmar Castle 1558, where a chamber, "Agdas kammare", ("Agda's chamber") is still named after her, and their relationship continued after he became king in 1560. https://www.kalmarslott.se/utstaellningar/agdakammaren
In 1561, she was married to the nobleman Joakim Fleming and given the estate Eknaholm outside Växjö, which had belonged to a monastery, and the relationship ended and continued after she became a widow in 1563. The relationship was not exclusive, as Eric had a large number of other mistresses; the period 1561-65, Anna Larsdotter, Karin Jacobsdotter, Karin Pedersdotter, Sigrid Nilsdotter, Doredi Valentinsdotter and the more anonymous Britta and Ingrid was all listed as the King's mistresses, but Agda was his main mistress. The position of these women was only half official.
She had several daughters with Eric and one daughter with Joakim Fleming, Anna, (born 1562). In 1561, the custody of her children was given to the king's sister, Princess Cecilia of Sweden, because: "I know she is not capable of raising them in good discipline and other things". When Cecilia left the country in 1564, the care, as well as the care of the other children of Eric, was given to Princess Elizabeth of Sweden; one of Elizabeth's servants, Karin Månsdotter, took care of Virginia. In 1565, Karin became the one and only mistress of Eric and replaced both Agda and all the others. Agda remarried Christoffer Olsson Stråle av Sjöared, sheriff of Stegeborg.

History of Agda Persdotter
Agda Persdotter, also known as "Agda in the gate", with unknown birth and death, was the Mistress of the same name in 1558 – 61 and possibly 1563 – 65.
Her year of birth is unknown. Agda has been declared the daughter of the magistrate Peder Klemetsson in St. Nicolai Port in Stockholm, a task which, however, has so far been impossible to verify. The father, however, has been a alderman and wealthy merchant in Stockholm, originating in Finland. Agda was called "Caritas" (Latin: Affection, Love) for the sake of her beauty.
Agda Persdotter was Erik's first mistress. It is unknown when they began their relations, but it was probably begun in Stockholm. She is confirmed as crown Prince Erik's mistress after his move to Kalmar 1558, where she got her own room in his residence called "Agdas chamber". The room was next to Erik's reception room. That the relationship started already in Stockholm is illustrated by the fact that the couple's daughter Virginia was born on 1 January 1559, seven months after Agda arrived in Kalmar in May 1558. Erik should not have had any other mistress during this time.
Agda Persdotter had at least two daughters with Erik XIV, Virginia and Constantia:
- Virginia Eriksdotter (1559 – 1633), married to governor Håkan Knutsson (Hand) .
- Constantia Eriksdotter (1560 – 1649), married to Häradshövdingen Henrik Franke Lin (d. 1610), known for his long journeys in Eastern Europe.
- Lucretia (born 1564), has been deposed as the daughter of Agda, but there is no evidence of this. Lucretia is reported in a source to have been married to a Daniel Zelow. Erik himself set up a horoscope of both Virginia and Constantia. A third illegitimate daughter of Erik XIV,
In the autumn of 1560 Erik planned a trip to England to be free to Queen Elizabeth, and thus he was expected to do away with his mistress, as was the custom when a prince entered into marriage. He brought Agda to Stockholm, where she begat the couple's second daughter, Constantia, on June 13. On 25 August 1560 was conferred Agda Eknaholms Gård, which is regarded as her pension. In September, however, Erik was king and his trip to England had to be canceled. It is unknown whether Agda remained as Erik's mistress during this time, but it is believed to be probable. In September 1561, Erik planned to resume the trip to England. The trip was cancelled again, but Agda still ceased to be Erik's mistress.
On September 24, 1561, Erik ceded custody of his daughters with Agda to his sister Cecilia. He also gives Cecilia permission to use force and all the means she considers necessary to take over the children from Agda. Agda married in September 1561 with Erik's Chamberlain, nobleman Joakim Eriksson Fleming (1534 – 1563), brother of the Finnish hövitsman Clas Eriksson Fleming. The marriage had been arranged before Erik's trip to England, with the idea that it was necessary if Erik entered into marriage, but got off even though the trip was cancelled. At the wedding, she received in addition to the previously appointed Eknamholm in Småland also several tax-free properties in Södermanland. With Fleming, Agda had the daughter Anna (born 1562).
In 1563 she became a widow, and it is possible that she was then mistress to Erik again. In 1565, all Erik's favourites were replaced by Karin Månsdotter. Agda Persdotter's further life is unknown, but there is information that she should have married Christoffer Olofsson Ray of Lakes, Royal Commanders and Commandant at stegeborg Castle and Söderköping Castle. Her death is unknown.
