Adlai Ewing Stevenson of Bloomington, Illinois was elected as Vice President of the United States to serve with President Grover Cleveland during Cleveland's second nonconsecutive term from 1893 to 1897. Stevenson was born on Oct. 23, 1835 in Christian County, Kentucky and moved with his parents to Bloomington in 1852. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University at Bloomington and was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1858 setting up his law practice in Metamora in Woodford County. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1874 and served four years. He was Assistant Postmaster General in Cleveland's first term. He also ran as the Democratic nominee for Vice President with William Jennings Bryan in 1900. It was in a sense an all-Illinois ticket since Bryan was born in Salem, Illinois and grew up in the state and studied law in Illinois. In 1908, Adlai was an unsuccessful nominee for governor of Illinois, losing to Republican incumbent Charles Deneen. He died on June 14, 1914 and is buried in Bloominton Cemetery.
