Immigration

In 1638 an “Adam Moll (sic), 19, servant, tailor," was recorded as a passenger for New England on the ship Bevis of Southampton. He was one of ten servants listed with Stephen Dummer of Bishopstoke, county Hants, husbandman, who settled first in Newbury, Massachusetts.

"Bevis of Southampton, one hundred and fifty tons, Robert Batten, Master. Probably sailed in May, 'by vertue of the Lord Treasurers warrant of the second of May, wch was after the restraynt and they some days gone to sea Before the Kings Mates Proclamation Came into Southampton.'"

THE DESCENDANTS OF ADAM MOTT

Adam Mott is the first heard of in 1645, when he was of New York. On the 28th of July, 1647, he married there, Jane Hulet, he then as from county Essex, and she, a maid, from county Buckingham. His oldest children Adam and James were baptized in New York. Ten years later he was settled at Hempstead, on the north shore, where he continued to reside until his death. There are several important documents upon record concerning him. One, dated 1682, enumerates his "four sonns by my Frist wiffe Jane Mott, viz. Addam, Jeams, John and Joseph". The second ins his will, dated March 12, 1681-2, wherein he names his "eldest son Adam," sons James, John, Joseph and Gershom, dau. Grace, three children of his deceased son Henry, "youngest son Adam," wife Elizabeth and "all ye children I have by her". The third document is an agreement dated 1691 by which the widow confirms certain lands to sons by the first marriage, viz. Adam, James, John and Joseph, being joined therein by one of her own sons, Richbell, probably the only one then of age. The las of these documents is a release given by John Okeson, in 1703, (who had meantime married the youngest daughter by the second wife,) of his interest in the estate which Adam Mott "did give to his six youngest children which he had by his last wife Elizabeth, unto Richbell Mott, William Mott, Charles Mott and Adam Mott, Jr.

The second wife of Adam Mott was the daughter of Ann, the wife of John Richbell of Mamaroneck, probably by a previous husband whose name was Redman. She married not long prior to Nov., 5, 1691, Robert Hubs, and was living as late as 1698, as his wife.

Adam Mott died probably a little while before Apr. 5, 1690.

His children were:-

Adam2, James2, Henry2, Grace2, John2, Joseph2, Gershom2, by the first wife, and

Richbell2, Maryanne2, Elizabeth2 , William2, Charles2, and Adam2 by the second wife.

Of the daughters, Grace married Jonathan Smith, Jr., and Elizabeth mar. John Okeson.

notes

"In 1659. Richard Vallingtyne was one of the five chosen Townsmen of the town of Hempstead. The other four were Francis Wicks, Robert Marvin, Adam Mott and Richard Brutnall."

From The American Genealogist Vol. 35, page 107:

"Another Adam Mott came to Newbury, Mass., and later migrated to Long Island. In the shipping list in 1638 he was aged 19 years, and in his will in 1681 he called himself aged about 60. At his marriage to his first wife, Jane Hallet, in 1647, the Dutch Church records of New Amsterdam enter him as from Essez County. This Adam Mott had children by his first wife named James, Grace, Henry, John, Joseph and Gershom.

"The Saffron Walden Parish Registers contain the following baptisms of children of James and Grace Mott:

  1. Adam,   21 Jan 1620/1
  2. Henry,  31 May 1623
  3. George,  20 Nov. 1625.

"It will be noted that the Adam baptized 1620/1 was of the proper age to be the Long Island settler, and that the names James, Grace and Henry correspond. James Mott, father of the above Adam, may possibly have been son of a Mr. George Mott who was buried at Saffron Walden 7 Feb. 1614/15.

"Probably the two Adams were closely related. Further research in Essex and Cambridgeshire is indicated."

comments

"Adam Mott born 1596 son of John Mott, went to MA on the DEFENCE. He later moved to RI when his father joined him They both seemed to have died in 1661. This Adam is the progenitor of the "RI and CT Motts"
His cousin, Adam Mott born 1621 son of JAMES MOTT (brother of John) went to NY on the BEVIS in 1639. He lived on Long Island and is the progenitor of the "NY Motts"

"The father of James and John was JOHN Mott of Saffron Walden. It is very common to mix these two families and to get the Adams confused."

Motts of Long Island vs Rhode Island
Information regarding the Long Island and Rhode Island Lines of the Adam Motts
Adam Mott of Long Island is believed to be the Adam Mott, age 19, who appears on the ship list for the "Bevis" in 1639. I don't know exactly where this ship landed, but this Adam was a single man whenhe arrived and was the right age to be Adam of Long Island. This Adam is the one who "is first heard of in New York in 1645.....etc." He did have two wives, Jane Hewlett or Hulet, first and ElizabethRichbell or Redman second.
Adam Mott of Rhode Island arrived in 1635 on the ship "Defence", along with his (second) wife, Sarah (Jennings) Lott Mott. With them were Adams children by his first marriage: John, Adam, Jonathan, and Elizabeth; and Sarah's daughter by her first marriage: Mary Lott. Adam and Sarah had three sons after their arrival. This Mott family went to Rhode Island and remained there, creating a line of Motts that later merged with the Long Island Mott families.
Mary Lott (daughter of Sarah Jennings by her first husband) married Adam Mott (son of Adam Mott by his first wife). Mary and her husband, Adam, were step siblings, no blood relation. Their daughter, Abigail, married Benjamin Haviland. The Haviland family also originated in Rhode Island according to the Haviland book by Frost. Benjamin and Abigail Haviland removed to Long Island. Their descendants mixed with the descendants of Adam Mott of Long Island resulting in individuals who are descendants of both Mott lines.
This Adam, born 1623 in England who married Mary Lott, is not the same individual as the Adam, born 1621 in England, who is the progenitor of the Long Island Mott line. They may be related, possibly cousins, but they are two different individuals. Many people still confuse these two early Mott families, basing their information on some the older genealogical works that were incorrect.

Thank you to Kathy (Sparr) Mott for her help in attempting to sort this mess of Motts out as well as the descriptive paragraphs above.
She has a database at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mottgene/longlead.html She asks that it be noted that - "this is not to be considered research, it is a compilation of the data I have collected. The sources are given, and where there are discrepancies, they are noted." This database is made up of the data she has collected while searching for Major William Mott. Since there is such a large amount, and a couple of the sources are not readily available to all, she decided to publish it. Quite a few who belong to this Mott line have provided corrections and have contributed additions to the lines that were not complete.

There were several Adam Motts in New England in the early 1600s. This Adam Mott came from Essex Co., England to Newbury, MA in 1638 on the ship "Bevis." He was granted land from the Dutch governmant at Green Point LI in May of 1646. In 1655 he settled at Hempstead, LI, and his name is found in records there until his death before the date of the probate of his will--May 10, 1689. Later generationsof Motts were associated with the Society of Friends.

Adam Mott jr Adam jr. was 12 years old when he came to america with his father and step mother Sara Lott and he later marrieds Mary who was 4 years old and his step sister. they arrived on the Defense. They brought with them testimony of comformity to the discipline of the established church of England. His daughter Elizabeth Mott 1659-1723 is the last of the motts in our family tree after 6 generations that stretches back into the 1400's. The last name Mott first reached England following the Norman Conquest of 1066, from people who came from a town called Mott, in Coates du Nord, Normandy. The first Mott family lived in Essex, were they were seated from early times as they were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their leige Lord for their distinguished assistance at the Battle ofHastings in 1066 AD. mott family story little Egg Harbor Mott Family Posted: 19 Jun 2007 10:26PM Classification: Query Here is something I came up with from some work my cousin did and some sleuthing of my own. Little EggHarbor Mott Family Recently I have taken an interest in finding more about the family history of my given name. I was born Mary Louise Mott, eldest daughter of John and Adelaide Parkes Mott. Much of the credit in igniting this interest and indeed a majority of the legwork in creating the family tree I have been working off of goes to my cousin Jennifer Mott Palermo. She started this about 10 years ago and happened to send a copy of the work she did to my mother in hopes of creating an interest in her grandchildren, my kids since they are the only grandchildren my mother has. My father has been dead since 1985 and for most of my life I have had another person's name and family. Contact with my dad's family was very scant over these 20 years. Having seen her work and always having a bit of an interest into my family history, I was totally fascinated by what I saw and needed to find out more. I was so grateful to make contact with her so I could help continue the work of filling in the gaps and once again have contact with my "given name" family. Thanks Jennifer! I spotted many gaps and questions as I tried to solidify the different branches with historical records. My first attempt in the Mott line was to make sense of all the Motts named Adam. I saw in the tree that there were conflicting dates of birth given to Adam Mott born in Saffron Walden England and immigrated to both RIand Long Island NY. Many researchers have thought that was just one man. Using different websites and Ancestry's enormous files of historical records, I was able to determine that there were indeed two Adam Motts born about the same time in England with different parents. The records below come from Ancestry's Family Data Collection. "Long Island" Adam Child: Name: Adam Mott Father: Adam Mott Mother: Jane Hulet Hewlet Birth Date: 14 Nov 1649 City: Hempstead County: Long Island State: NY Country: USA "Rhode Island" Adam Child: Note death of child Adam. Name: Adam Mott Parents: Adam Mott , Mary Lott Birth Place: Bristol CO, Portsmouth, MA Birth Date: Sep 1650 Death Place: Portsmouth, Bristol CO, MA Death Date: 19 Dec 1656 Here is a sibling of the child of "Long Island" Adam just to show that he was still married to Jane Hewett after the birth of the child of "Rhode Island" Adam. Name: Elizabeth Mott Father: Adam Mott Mother: Jane Hewlet Birth Date: 1655 City: Greenpoint County: Kings State: NY Country: USA Other children to Adam and Jane are listed as well in ancestry's files. Since the line given in the tree my cousin gave me extends from Adam and Jane, I was able to use these records to totally eliminate the RI Motts from my research and concentrate exclusively on the long Island branch. My next step was to solidify the Little Egg Harbor line up to Adam and Jane. My line given on the tree from Adam and Jane goes like this 1Adam Mott m Jane Hewett 2.Adam Mott m Mary Stillwell 3.Thomas Mott m Deborah 4.John Mott m Phebe Cranmer 5.Henry Mott m Sarah Stanton 6.James Mott m Rebecca Regan 7.Joel Rose Mott m Mary Falkinburg 8.George Washington Mott m Anna Amelia Allen 9.Joel Allen Mott m Mary Belle Beek 10.John B Mott m Adelaide Parkes 11.Myself Working backwards from looking in cemeteries, documents from others and papers my cousin has, the line up to Thomas Mott was made strong with documented evidence that reconciles to the tree. I was having some difficulty reconciling Thomas to Adam. There is much documentation on the family of Adam Mott of Hempstead NY. Documented in many different places are children of Adam and Mary Stillwell Mott. Thomas was never listed among them. Earlier researchers from the Little EggHarbor line have possibly, as I did, stuck Thomas in as a son for many reasons. The first being the inaccuracies of early documentation could have excluded him from the list of children. A second could be excommunication. Adam, Mary and Thomas moved to Little Egg Harbor. Others in the line may have wanted to just forget him. A third very compelling and related reason is documented in the will of Thomas and a family history stating not much is known about Adam and Mary after 1719. Did Adam, Mary and Thomas travel to South Jersey to escape religious persecution in NY? Is the Adam on the will Thomas's father? After all, there is documentation that an Adam did die after Thomas. Below I have a copy of Thomas's will and the death record of Adam. Page: 331Name: Thomas Mott Date: 18 Nov 1724Location: Little Eggharbour, Burlington Co. planter; will of. Wife Deborah. Inventory, £11.2; made by Henry Cooper and Charles Tonkin. Here is a piece of evidence my cousin gave me to go along with the above death record: ADAM MOTT (3) (NJ) baptized 1649married Mary Stillwell daughter of Nicholas Stillwell. Adam died at Mansfield Meeting, home of Joseph Pancoast, jr d 1732. Now I have a link that the death record is the same Adam that married Mary Stillwell. I still needed link this Adam to Thomas. My cousin comes to the rescue again. The link is made in a deed from 1714. Under date of June 7, 1714 John Budd of the City of Philadelphia conveyed to Thomas (NJ2) and Adam (NJ1) yeomen, of Little Egg Harbor Twp, Burlington County, NJ 435 acres on the Bass River in LEHT. The consideration was the sum of five and forty pounds current money of the government of NY. He recites wife, DEBORAH, sons THOMAS (NJ3) JOHN (NJ3) and HENRY (NJ3) all under age and daughter MARY (NJ3) Inventory of the estate of Thomas Mott was made May 16, 1826 by Adam (NJ1) and Roger Osborne. Seeing the death of Adam at Mansfield Meeting, made me wonder if Adam, Mary and Thomas didn't convert to Quakerism. Early marriage records for Adam and Mary state they were married in the Dutch Reformed Church. Being a Quaker in Hempstead during the early 1700's would not be a good thing on Long Island. I can imagine that they went on to South Jersey because there Quakers werewelcome. The above documents seem to be conclusive evidence of the line I wrote for myself earlier in this piece. I still have a bit of trouble with this passage found in "The Descendants of Adam Mott of Hempstead Long Island, NY" written by Edward Doubleday Harris in 1906. Beside the known and the presumptive descendants of Adam Mott on Long Island there are others of the name there of undeniably different origin. Contemporary with Adam of Hempstead two others of the name were there, Cornelius, whos stay was short, and who appears ot have entered service against the Indians on the mainland, and is not afterwards heard of,--and another, called Lorus or Lowras, later Lawrens and Lawrence, who ultimately settled in Oyster Bay. He had two or three sons, Thomas2 (wife Deborah). John2 (wife Margaret) the carpenter of Wolver Hollow, and apparently, Adam2. This was the first time I had seen written evidence linking a father to Thomas with wife Deborah. I immediately went to work on finding out if this Thomas was the same as "my" Thomas. That this Lorus existed there was no doubt. Using Ancestry's message boards I was able to make contact with another person who could claim Lorus Mott as an ancestor. Her reply to me online included this about Lorus. Lorus Mott born 1648 - died Dec 15,1703. They were able to obtain some documentation from a library in Long Island. Below is what I received from the person via email. A chart I have from the Book of Charts on the Mott FAmily from the NY G&B - Soc. Library, form 122E - 58th street in NY City from the manuscript room - as per a lady that did my mom's genealogy over 20yrs ago This chart shows: 1. Lorus Mott M Joan Ireland 2. Thomas 1707-1713 died in NJ 1724 - will in NJ, Married Deborah, wife 1713 viv 1724 Children are listed as Thomas, John, Henry and Mary. This information seems to stem from Thomas Mott's Will from NJ. We have run into a wall after Lorus Mott. There are so many avenues and names that cross. We have yet to find out Who Lorus Mott had for parents. In another email I was able to get this from her. The dates 1707-1713 comes from the genealogy chart that he lived in Matenicock, NY during that time. Matenicock isa part of Oyster Bay on Long Island. Though it has no reference his time of birth - only to his death. It looks like 1713 would be his time of marriage to Deborah as it states under her name - wife 1713. She did state that the research of Edward Doubleday Harris, the source I found out about Lorus, has some loopholes. Indeed I did see some loopholes. My Lorus Mott contact sent me the documents via land mail and it is a tree someone did. It includes Lorus and his 3 sons, Thomas, John and Adam. Thomas is listed to be from Matinicock until about 1713 when he traveled to Little Egg Harbor. For Adam all they say is probably the Adam that died in Little Egg Harbor in 1732. John seems to be the only son of Lorus that has the most documentation. No documentation was given in the way of birth records proving Lorus as the father to the three. There is a sentence that is only half readable that says Thomas, Adam and John are brothers and they come from Matinicock. The document used exclusively to give any sort of information on Thomas and Adam was the will of Thomas in 1724 and the death notice of Adam in 1732. I surmise this was done to at least try to explain who these two men were since the times the men were alive did seem to coincide and the very limited amount of material for the family of Lorus Mott. Most of the material available seems to mention John more than any other. So the question remains. Who is right? The information provided by my cousin and other online sources give a very strong case to the Long Island Adam Mott. Since the Lorus Mott information lacks few if and reconciliation between documents and the given tree, I must continue to place my Mott descendants in America to Adam and Jane of Hempstead, NY. I consider this an unfinished work. Anyone who conducts any kind of research should conduct it in a way that others can confirm or refute. Who knows what family chest lies untouched in an old garret somewhere. That chest might have some untold stories that totally change my conclusions. It could also go on to confirm my conclusions as well. Research brings out the truth and I hope what I have done here will help others in their search. Last nightI learned that their are two Adam Motts born about 1620 who have records combined - tangled. I sat down now to straighten them out and I found this message of yours! Thank you for your work and for taking the time to record it. I know the Long Island Adam Mott is my direct ancestry; I believe that when I work on another Mott line of mine, it will be from the Rhode Island Adam Mott. Your cousin, Evelyn Re: Mott Family Ancestry tboner11 (View posts) Posted: 25 Mar 2017 05:01PM Classification: Query You are welcome and it is for people like you that I lost my findings. As I read this again I do have to say that I have found more evidence that places my line of Mott as coming through the mysterious Lotus Mott and not Adam Mott. Some time in the near future I will document that here.
Adam Mott of Staten Island ADAM MOTT OF STATEN ISLAND. By Edward Doubleday Harris. Heretofore but little has been published concerning the elder branch of the Adam' Mott family of Hempstead, Long Island, N. Y. The patriarch had, as is abundantly established by con- temporaneous documents,* two sons bearing his own name, Adam,' the eldest of the children, who was baptized in the Dutch Church of NewAmsterdam, 14 Nov., 1649, and Adam, the youngest, who was born at Cow Neck, 20 Aug., 1680, as the bible record reads, " at i P. M." It is with the elder of the two that we have to do at this time. The story of the younger is well known. t Adam," as has been said, was baptized 14 Nov., 1649, the first child of his parents who had been married 28 July, 1647. He was therefore but eight years of age when his father had taken residence at Hempstead, near the head of the Harbor, in 1657. In 1671, then twenty-two, he purchased of Edward Titus, three acres of land with a house, calling himself Adam, "junior." On March 23, 1674, "Adam Mott, junior," was a seaman on the ketch Hopewell from New York to Virginia. In 1678, still "jr." and "of Hempstead," he was cited to appear to answer to a charge ofdebt, brought by Gabriel Minviell of New York. Sept. 25, 1691, as " eldest son of Adam Mott, dec'd, who died intestate," he petitioned Court that he might be appointed to administer his father's estate. He sold his interest in the Cow Neck lands to William Nicoll, Sept. 20, 1693. On April 30, 1694, then calling himself " Sr.," he conveyed his interests in certain lands that had been his father's to his half brothers and sisters, his brother Adam at that time being but fourteen years old. The Hempstead Census! of 1698 lists him between the families of his brother John Mott and James Jackson (evidently his nearest neighbors), one Nicholas Stilwell, probably of his wife's family, being of his household. " M^ Adam Mott M". Mary Mott An Mott Mary Mott Adam Mott, jr. Nicholas Stilwell." His wife's name first appears in deeds in connection with his in 1704, though he had been married as early, certainly, as 1678, to Mary, the daughter of Nicholas and Mary Stilwell. In 1705 he was Justice of the Peace, and apparently living at Rockaway, on the south side. This is the last recorded evidence of him and his wife, as living, that appears.

Quite a few who belong to this Mott line have provided corrections and have contributed additions to the lines that were not complete.

mott family story little Egg Harbor Mott Family Posted: 19 Jun 2007 10:26PM Classification: Query Here is something I came up with from some work my cousin did and some sleuthing of my own. The first group of records belongs to the "Long Island" Adam Mott Name: Adam Mott Father: James Mott Birth Date: 21 Jan 1621 City: Essex This record states his birth and Father Now to show the records of immigration: Adam Mott Year: 1645 Age: 23 Estimated birth year: abt 1622 Place: New York, NY Source Publication Code: 8198 Primary Immigrant: Mott, Adam Annotation: Concerns 700 early inhabitants of New Netherland and New York. Children--Thomas, John, Henry, Mary. Real and personal estate. The wife sole executrix. Witnesses--Jone Mott, Adam Mott, Joshua Hunloke. Proved May 16, 1726. 1724 Dec. 16. Inventory of the personal estate, £81.17.9; made by Adam Mott and Roger Orsborne. Page: 350Name: Adam Mott Date: 05 Dec 1732Location: Little Egg Harbour, Burlington Co. yeoman. Int. Adm'r, Joseph Pancoast, Jun'r, of Mansfield. John Doe and Richard Roe, of same, fellow bondsmen. 1732, Dec. 5. Joseph Pancoast states that deceased died at his house. Lib. 3, p. 222. 1732, Dec. 9. Happy hunting to all who pass this way Re: Mott Family Ancestry Evelyn Puaa (View posts) Posted: 25 Mar 2017 02:19PM Classification: Query Surnames: Mott It is nearly ten years since you wrote this message.
