Adam II, 2nd Baron Everingham

Biography

Sir Adam de Everingham, 2nd Baron Everingham (1307–1388), son and heir. m. Joan d'Eyvill. Fought at the Siege of Berwick and Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333,[2] the Battle of Sluys and Siege of Tournay in 1340,[2] the Battle of Crecy in 1346[8] and the Siege of Calais in 1347.[2] Summoned to Parliament by Writ in January 1371.[3] He died 8 February 1387/88 in Laxton, Northumberland, England.

Adam de Everingham was a son of Sir Adam de Everingham, 1st Lord Everingham and his first wife Clarice.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

He was born c 1307 (age 79 in January 1386/1387).[1]

His father died shortly before 08 Feb 1340/1341. His heir was his son Adam.[10]

Marriage and Children

He married before 16 May 1332 Joan d' Eiville, daughter of Sir John Deiville of Egmanton and Adlingfleet, by his 2nd wife Margaret.[1][2][3][11]

Notes

• Adam de Everingham, 2nd baron, son and heir of Adam de Everingham and Clarice de la Warre.
• He was at the siege of Berwick, March to July 1333, at the battle of Halidon Hill, 19 July 1333, with the King at Antwerp, 1338-39, at the battle of Sluys, June 24, 1340, and at the siege of Tournay July to September following.
• The King took his homage for the manor of Laxton, and his fealty for the manor of North Leverton, which manors his father had held for life, and he had livery thereof, June 13, 1341.
• He was taken prisoner in France, before May 14, 1342, and was ransomed for 200 marks in gold.
• He was in France, in the retinue of the Earl of Derby in September following, and in Gascony, in the retinue of the same Earl, 1345-46, at the siege of Calais in 1347, in the retinue of the Earl of Lancaster, and was about to go to France, in the same retinue, in 1348 and 1355.
• Having been indicted of divers trespasses, he was detained in gaol at Nottingham Castle in August 1351.
• He was present when Edward Balliol made over the Kingdom of Scotland to Edward III in January 1355/6, and
• accompanied the King in his invasion of France in October 1359, being with the King before Paris in April 1360.
• He was summoned to a Council, March 20, 1349/50, and to Parliament, January 8, 1370/1, by writs directed Ade de Everyngham de Laxton'.
• He married Joan, daughter of Sir John d'Eiville, of Egmanton and Adlingfleet, by his 2nd wife, Margaret.
• She, who inherited Egmanton, died 10 years or more before him.
• He died February 9, 1387/8, at Laxton, aged about 80

Death and Inquisition Post Mortem 1388

He died on 8 February 1387/1388 at Laxton, Nottinghamshire, age 80.[1][9]

NB According to Clay he died 8 Feb 1378/1379, with an Inquisition Post Mortem 9 years later in 1388. Perhaps a print error.[2]

The Inquisition Post Mortem of Adam de Everyngham of Laxton, knight, around Easter 11 Richard II [1388] indicated that had died on Saturday, 8 February last and that Reynold de Everyngham, knight, his son, aged 30 years, was his next heir male.[4]

The IPM also noted that:

• Adam had a son William who predeceased him and that William had married Alice daughter of John Gray, lord of Codenore, and they had two daughters living in 1388 namely Joan (born c 1363) and Katherine (born c 1365).
• Adam's wife Joan had died c 1378.
• His father was Adam the elder and that in 1337/1338 the manor of Westburgh (presumably in Yorkshire) was "settled on the said Adam for life, with successive remainders to Adam de Everyngham, the younger, and Joan his wife and the heirs male of his body, to Robert brother of the said Adam the younger and the heirs male of his body, to Edmund brother of the said Robert and the heirs male of his body, to Alexander brother of the said Edmund and the heirs male of his body, to Nicholas brother of the said Alexander and the heirs male of his body, and to the right heirs of the said Adam the elder."
