MR. HENRY D. DAUNT.

The death occurred at Maitland Hospital on Sunday, of one of Maitland's oldest residents, Mr. Henry Digby Daunt, at the age of 87 years.

Mr. Daunt was born on the site opposite the present Catholic Cathedral, in 1842. He was highly respected, and well-known in Maitland and surrounding districts. During the early part of his life, he acted as chief drover for the late Duncan Mackay, travelling at times with as many as 1500 head of cattle through New South Wales and Victoria, encountering blacks, and he travelled and actually had meals with bushrangers, for whom he always had a good word, particularly Thunderbolt.

Later, he became a storekeeper, hotelkeeper, road and bridge contractor, and was for almost 20 years park gardener for West Maitland Council, where he proved most efficient, producing blooms that will always be remembered. He was held in popular esteem by the councilors, and the general public.

He ceased duty at the age of 80 years, but continued to lead an active prlvate life, until five weeks ago, when illness overtook him. The funeral took place from his late residence, Belmore Road, West, Maitland, on Monday, Rev. C. W. J. Gumbley officiated at the home and graveside.

Deceased leaves two sons and three daughters — Herbert (Cessnock), Gordon (West Maitland), Mrs. F. (Edith) Brackley, Mrs. B. (Marjorie) Mosman, and Mrs. F. (Elsie) Tranter (Newcastle).

The chief of mourners were :-— Herbert, Gordon (sons), F. Brackley, F. Tranter, B. Mosman (sons-in-law), Thos. Daunt, and Clifford Jones (nephews) (snip).
