Abraham van Hooser

GEDCOM Note

Abraham was about 18 years old when he moved with his father to Fincastle Co., VA in 1774. A year later he moved with his fataher to the North Fork of the Clinch River, but moved back two years later due to Indian uprisings. They settled along Glade’s Creek, a branch of Crooked Creek, a branch of New river in Montgomery (now Carroll) Co., VA.

In 1798 he moved with his brother-in-law, William Williams, to Grainger Co., TN. In 1802/3 he moved to Overton Co., TN, where he remained until 1812 when he moved with his married children to Madison Co., IL. He became one of the largest landholders in that township. According to the History of Madison Co., IL, he owned 1040 acres. He died 30 Aug 1834 in Madison Co, IL. His wife Mary, preceded him in death. both were buried in Daniel Reece’s graveyard, which no longer exists.
Fincastle County Entries Page 21: “Early Adventures on the Western Waters” shows page 45, Vincent Williams, 400 acres on east side Grosses Creek, 400 acres adjoining on north side. August 17, (1780) David Williams, 499 acres on road at last crossing of Middle Creek; 400 acres on south side of last entry for Williams, Vincent Williams, 400 acres on east side of small branch of hte Ohio about four miles below the mouth of Liking Creek and about three miles fro the river; there is on sd. branch a large clay lick about one-half mile from the mouth of it.

In 1794 & 1796 he was taxed by Grayson Co., for 380 acres,

Abraham Vanhoser, assignee of John Vanhoser, Commissioner’s certificate 400 acres on Wolf Glade Creek. Also see page 109 for entries dated 1776 and 1777.

17 Jul 1802, Grayson Co., VA deed. Abraham Van Hooser of Grainger Co., TN to James Farmer of Grayson Co., VA 200 acres on Wolf Glade Creek. Witnessed by Charles Anthony, Wm Williams, David Williams & John Wilkes…… proved in Grayson by three of the subscribing witnesses. Don’t know which three, but the witness David Williams could only be your David if he witnessed the deed in Grainger because we know he was in Tennessee by 1796 and it is not likely he would travel to Grayson simply to prove the deed. The information was passed through the Reece family. I(Patty Reece) have no photos. My understanding is that the cemetery is no longer around. I have the following info: Dan Reece Cemetery, Canteen Creek, Madison, Illinois. It's supposed to be by Troy, Il. I also have the following: At the Site of Canteen Creek Primitive Baptist Church near Troy, Madison County, Illinois.

This cemetery is located at the second site of the Canteen Creek United Baptist Church. The church obtained a parcel of land for a meeting house and burial ground from Daniel and Polly Reece in 1844, in Sec. 16 of Jarvis township. An earlier site, dating back to 1817, also had a cemetery, Sec.1 of Collinsville township. As per Patty Reece, November 21, 2008.
