Abraham Des Moulins

Abraham Des Moulins was born Abt. 1630 in Paris, France, and died Bef. 1687 in Prob. Paris, France. He married Madelaine Chupret.

The revocation of the "Edict of Nantes" was in 1685.

In 1699/1700 there were five embarkations from England to Virginia and Carolina. The names of 3 of the 5 ships which trasported Huguenots were 'Peter and Anthony,' 'Nassau' and 'Mary Ann.' The 'Mary Ann' was the first ship to arrive in Virginia (at the mouth of the James River).

About five hundred Huguenots settled in Carolina by 1700. Many of these were artisans, following trades in the New World that they had learned in the Old: blacksmiths, coopers, gunsmiths, and clockmakers. And many were young and newly married, a younger population being more willing to undertake the long and dangerous ocean voyage. These French-speaking settlers quickly moved into the political life of the young colony, also quickly organized their own church in Charlestown. In 1700-1701 over three hundred French Huguenot refugees were settled by the colonial authorities on the south bank of the James River in King William Parish (ten thousand acres donated by King William III), Manakin, Goochland County, Virginia.

Manakin is about 15 miles west of Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia on Rt 6 (Patterson Ave.) & River Road. A bridge across the James River on River Road in the West-End of Richmond is called the Huguenot Bridge.

Some Huguenots later moved to Colonial Williamsburg, James City County, Virginia (east of Richmond along I-64); Essex County, Virginia; and Hanover County, Virginia.

Madeleine Des Moulins and her children, Paul, Abraham and Marie arrived in London as refugees sometime between 1685 and 1687.

Samuel Stiles in a book about the Huguenots states that the Des Moulins family in France was "an ancient and noble family of the Isle de France", related to the divines Pierre, Charles and Louis des Moulin.

About 1555 many families in France turned from Catholicism and embraced Protestantism. French Protestants were remover from the rolls of nobles, and were stripped of honor and titles by the government. The Edict of Nantes 1598 gave tolerance to the French Protestants, but it was repealed in 1685. Estates were seized by the government. It appears that the Moulin family anticipated the repeal 12 years before the repeal and took a boat from the northeast coast of France to the Isle of Guernsey of the Channel Island which belonged to the British.

Don't know if either of these three names could be fatherto Abraham Sr., or not. They were considered exiled French gentry anda noble family. Abraham probably died in Paris, France. About the name Moulin I, Matt Neace, Jr., received a couple of emails from Iaacov Haim De La Rosa from Israel.

First he informed me that the name Moulin, Molina, Miller, etc. are the same name. Then later sent one that said:
