In the name of the Supreme Architect of the Universe. Amen. I, Abraham Vanmeter, Considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory blessed be the Almighty God for the same, Do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say:

ITEM: I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Elizabeth Vanmeter for and during her natural life, the following property to wit:

  • The one Third part of my home place to be so laid off as to include the dwelling house and mills and also one Third one Third part of all my other real Estate;
  • I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Elizabeth the following Negro slaves Jacob, George and Solomon, Amelia and Mary for and during her natural life and at her death to be Emancipated upon the same terms and conditions as are directed with my other Negro slaves;
  • Also four good work horses, a good waggon and gears; Two good brood mares, Six milch cows; Twelve heads of two good old Steers, Twenty four head of good sheep;p Twelve head of the best of my stock hogs with two good breed sows; All my household and kitchen furniture of every description.
  • I also give and bequeath to my beloved wife a small Tract or Parcell of Land lying on the North Fork of Pattersons Creek with its appurtenances.
  • I also give and bequeath unto my wife as aforesaid the one Third part of the money arising from the sale of my personal Estate not herein specially willed or devised to be paid to her as soon as may be after my decease.
  • ITEM: It is my will and desire that the Lands which I purchased of my brother Isaac Vanmeter in the County of Hampshire be sold and the money arising from such sale be appropriated to the payment of all my Just debts provided nevertheless that if the said Debts are fully paid and satisfied It is my will and desire and I hereby give and bequeath the said Lands lying the County of Hampshire with all and singular, the tenements, herediments and appurtenances thereunto belonging to my nephew Abraham Vanmeter, to him his heirs and assigns forever.
  • ITEM: Considering the great hardships of Slavery to which are unfortunate class of beings among us is doomed and wishing as much as (in consideration of their faithful servitude to me) in my power lies to ameliorate their condition. It is my will and desire that all my Negro slaves be at my decease completely Emancipated agreeable to the existing Laws of this Commonwealth Provided that should my death hapen after there was a crop put out, the said slaves shall be kept together and work as usual until the crop is secured and for their services Shall residue the one Third part of same and it is my will and desire thta my Executors hereinafter named, shall have the management and appoint a fit person to superintend the same, And to add more to their comfort and convenience until they may have it in their power to removed.
  • I do will and order the following Lands be sold by my Executors namely One Tract on Mill Creek, One Tract on the Pattersons Creek Mountain and One Tract on the Allegany Mountain on the waters of Abraham's Creek. And the money arising from such Sales to be qually divided among them, first having divided the sums of Four Hundred Dollars to Joe and his family for their particular attention and faithful servitude to me.
  • And it is my further will and desire that the One Third part of the money arising from the Sale of my personal Estate be equally divided as aforesaid among my Negroes.
  • I do hereby appoint David Vanmeter and Charles A. Turley my particular and Trusty friends my Executors of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all and former Wills by me made.
  • In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of November in the year of our Lord, Eighteen Hundred and Twenty.

At a Court held for Hardy County this 9th day of September 1823 The last Will and Testament of Abraham Vanmeter deceased was presented in Court, proved by the oaths of Charles A. Turley Jr., Alexander Rowan and Joseph Williams, these witnesses thereto, and Ordered to be recorded.

Abraham Meter, a son of Johannes Meter and his wife Christina, a born Blumin, was born on the 15th day of August in the year of Christ 1779 in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County, state of Pennsylvania, and baptized in the year 1803 from Pastor Mister Helfenstein, who also confirmed him. Married for a second time on the 7th of April 1823.
