Abraham Moon, I

Abraham Moon (son of Warren Moon and Catherine Crowley) was born April 06, 1771, and died 1847 in Garrett County Maryland.He married (1) Sophia Six, daughter of Henry Six and Elizabeth Greintsch Six.He married (2) Mary Hull on 1799, daughter of Benjamin Hull and Jermiah King.

Said to be of German descent.

Notes from Charles E. Hoye "Garrett County History of Pioneer Families" LVI first published in the Oakland, Garrett Co., MD. newspaper Oct. 10, 1935; later in a book. Hoye wrote regarding the earliest Moons in Garrett County, Md. (part of Allegany County until 1872):

"The MOONs in Allegany County"

"Abraham MOON resided about twelve miles from Morgantown, W. Va." (Virginia until 1863) "before moving into Allegany County, Md. On the roll of 1804-5 Abraham Moon was assessed in District No. 1, with personal property only valuation of $128. In the same district he was listed in the census of 1810 as head of a family of ten. "Marcus MOON appears here in the census of 1810 as head of a family of nine. Marcus MOORE (MOON?) was assessed in 1811 with military lots 17 and 18 and with 'Pritchard's Folly' --total 273 acres-- in the Bloomington neighborhood." "Jacob MOON , a brother of Abraham, was listed in 1810 as head of a family of seven."

"About 1804 Abraham settled east of Great Back Bone (Mt.) above the present (town of) Gorman. Some years later he moved to the Bethlehem Church neighborhood in (near) Ryans Glade."
"July 4, 1836, Michael Wilson deeded to Abraham Moon military lots 387, 388, 389, 391,--200 acres-- land patented by Wilson in 1826. MOON had probably lived here for years before he obtained his deed. His log house was near the present Bethlehem Church at the spring, at the farm now owned by R. Menke." (1935)

We, (myself, my companion of now nearly 30 years Dorothy L. Kump, and my father's sister Emma L. Bowser) visited the old Abraham MOON homestead in the mid 1990's. At that time the farm was still intact, all 200 acres and was owned by a Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Upperman. Mrs. Upperman was a granddaughter of Garrett MOON's daughter Susan Elvina MOON married to Nathaniel HARVEY. (By Samuel Bowser - 2001)

They cordially invited us into the house where I taped conversations between all of us concerning the MOON farm, and Mr. Upperman led us several hundred yards through the woods above the house to the site of the Abraham MOON cemetery, where most likely Abraham, his wives, some of his children and his son Garrett Van Meter MOON's first wife, Mary ann ENLOW are buried. I would guess perhaps 12-15 unmarked field stones stand up on end to mark the graves and only one bears an inscription; "ENLOW" crudely cut into the field stone. "The spring" Hoye mentions is still behind the house and appears ancient. Aunt Emma recalled stopping there once with her uncle Charley MOON, probably back in the 1940's or 50's on a hot day and 'Uncle Charley' going to the spring for a drink of water. Wish I had also drank from that spring when we were there. It had a heavy iron door on it as I recall.

1. Earliest reference is possibly in 1776 when an Abraham Moon was born (approximately) in Hampshire Co.
2. Then references to Abraham moved to Lovettsville, Loudoun Co.... Va. in 1789 (age 18) and 1791 (age 20).
3. He is then mentioned in 1797 in Thurmont, Frederick Co. Md. when his son Johannes was baptized at the Apples Lutheran and Reformed Church. His 2nd son George was also born 1798, apparently in the same location. His wife Sophia probably died in 1798 or 1799, as did her father, Henry Six, also in Frederick Co. Va.
4. Then is found again in 1800 in Hamshire Co. VA (now WV ) as married to Mary Hull and mentioned in her father's will (Benjamin
Hull).
5. Also in 1800, Abraham received a land grant of 15 acres on Dixons Run in Hampshire Co. Wva (now Mineral County).
6. Abraham is next found on the tax roles of Allegany Co. Md. in 1804.
7. Meanwhile, back in Frederick Co. Md. John and George were orphans in 1806 at the ages of 9 and 8.
8. In 1810, Abraham is still listed in the census of Garrett or Allegany Co. Md. As was Jacob, as the head of a family of seven.
9. In 1815, Abraham apparently moved to Glady Creek in what is now Marion Co. Wva, then Monongalia. The rest of his children were born there.
10. In 1818, Abraham bought 125 acres on Glady Creek from William Trickett.
11. In 1820, Abraham is on the census in Monongalia Co.
12. In 1829, Abraham sold the 125 acre Glady Creek tract to William Smith.
13. In 1830, Abraham is found again on the census for Allegany County, Garrett

County, in District 1.
14. Jacob and Abraham were present at the public property sale of Upton Bruces estate in Ryans Glade in Garrett Co.
15. In 1836, Abraham was deeded military lots totaling 200 acres from Michael Wilson.
16. In 1840, Abraham is on the census for Allegany Co. Md. in Glades.
17. Abraham died in Garrett Co. Md. without a will in 1847.
18. Mary Hull is apparently listed as the widow of Abraham and was alive in 1850 in the Allgeany Co. Md. Census.
