Abigail or Lydia ? Dean

Biography One of the six known children of Walter Deane and Eleanor Cogan was a daughter who was married to Bartholomew Tipping. Her first name is not known. She was born in Taunton, Massachusetts. Martin estimated her birth year as 1644.[1] Most early records of births, deaths, and marriages in Taunton have been lost, and the name of this daughter is not found in any extant records of Taunton.[2]

She was married to Bartholomew Tipping before 8 July 1686, when Walter Deane executed a deed in which he called Bartholomew Tipping his son-in-law.[3] That identification indicated that a daughter of Walter Deane (name undetermined) was married to Bartholomew Tipping.

Bartholomew Tipping and his wife had one child, daughter Lydia (Lidia), who married Ebenezer Burt.[4]

Speculation on First Name Many unsourced Internet genealogies, including the Ancestral File, indicate that Walter Deane had a daughter named Abigail, born in about 1646, who may have been the daughter who married Bartholomew Tipping. The basis for calling her Abigail is not known.

The name Lydia also has been suggested for her. Mrs. Creer noted that a Deane Genealogy by Josiah Drummond, deposited in manuscript form at the New England Historic Genealogical Society, stated that Walter Dean had a daughter Lydia who married Bartholomew Tipping. Mrs. Creer suggested that Drummond had confused her with her daughter Lydia Tipping, the only known child of Bartholomew Tipping.[5]
