Abigail Lothrop

Abigail Doane was born about 1631 and died in Norwich, Connecticut on January 23, 1734/5. Her burial place is unknown. She married Samuel Lothrop as his 2nd wife in the early 1690s, but had no children. He died about 1700.

She went with her father's family in 1645 from Plymouth to Nauset, or Eastham, where she lived about 45 years. Her name appears several times on Eastham records as the owner of horses.

May 6, 1672, sold and delivered according to a Court Order by Abigail Doane, to an Indian called Moses, one bay horse, ear marked two slits, a star in the forehead, a little white streak over the left nostril, burn marked E on the near buttock. Eastham town record.

On her 100th birthday, an audience of her neighbours and church people assembled in her rooms at Norwhich, wehre a sermon was preached by her pastor, the Rev. Benjamin Lord. At this time, it is claimed, she retained to a remarkable degree the intelligence and vivacity of her earlier years.

Will of John Doane

In his will dated May 18, 1678, inventory taken May 21, 1686 and sworn by Abigail Doane May 29, 1686, he named his "loving wife," daughter Abigail, sons John, Daniel and Ephraim, and granddaughter Margaret Hicks, and left the remainder of his estate to "all my sons and daughters". He described himself in the will as "aged eighty and eight or there about" and in the inventory he was said to have died February 21, 1685/86, "aged about a hundred years" - a typical overstatement of age which occurred in those times.

John Doane

• John Doane John Doane (c.1590 - 1685/6) He arrived in Plymouth Colony on an unknown ship sometime between 1628 and 1632. During his long life he is considered a person of note in Plymouth Colony serving in many government capacities associated with the colony government, such as government committees and deputy for Plymouth as well as Assistant Governor in 1632/33. He left government service for a time in the 1630s to serve as deacon in the Plymouth Church.[1]
• John Doane stated he was born in England and in his 1678 will he stated he was age about eighty-eight years of age making his birth year being about 1590. Nothing else is known of his English ancestry. There is no record of John Doane being in Leiden, Holland, although he was a Plymouth church deacon.[2]

• John Doane's earliest known wife was called Ann in a 1648 deed, but in a later deed (of 1659) his wife was Lydia.[2]
• John Doane married:
• 1. Ann (poss. Perkins) by 1625 and had five children. She died on June 1, 1654 and was buried in Cove Burying Ground, Eastham.
• 2. Lydia ___ by April 1, 1659 and died between May 18, 1678 and December 23, 1681. Her burial place is unknown.

  • Lydia born about 1625 and died by June 1677. She married Samuel Hicks in Plymouth on September 11, 1645 and had two children. Their burial places are unknown.
  • Abigail was born about 1631 and died in Norwich, Connecticut on January 23, 1734/5. Her burial place is unknown. She married Samuel Lothrop as his 2nd wife in the early 1690s, but had no children. He died about 1700.
  • John was born about 1635 and died on March 15, 1707/8. He was buried in Cove Burying Ground, Eastham.

  • Ephraim was born about 1642 and died in 1700 in Eastham, Mass. He was buried in Cove Burying Ground, Eastham, as was his 2nd wife Mary.

  • 1. Mercy Knowles at Eastham, Mass. On February 5, 1667/8 and had eight children.
  • 2. Mary (Smalley) Snow as her second husband after April 1692 but had no children. She died in 1703.[3]

• John Doane died in Eastham, Massachusetts on February 21, 1685/6. He was buried in Cove Burying Ground in Eastham where his tombstone is existent as well as memorials in his honor.[6]
• In 1869 the Doanes erected a memorial stone on the site of Deacon John's house in Eastham, Massachusetts. That site, overlooking Nauset Bay, is now a part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. In 1906, a perpetual lot in the Old Town Cove burial ground, including the grave site of Deacon Daniel Doane, a son, was set aside. The following year a memorial stone with a bronze tablet honoring Deacon John Doane was erected. In 1994 a granite stone and bronze marker commemorating the 350th anniversary of the founding of Nauset was dedicated at the homesite.

• 2 LYDIA2 DOANE (John1) was born probably before her parents came to Plymouth. She married Sept. 11, 1645, Samuel Hicks who came over to Plymouth with his mother, younger brother and sisters, in the Ann, in 1623. His father, Robert Hicks, came over in the Fortune, in 1621, .... etc. He returned to Plymouth, where two of their children were born, and was a constable in that town in 1654. He was sometime an inhabitant of Barnstable. Mr. Otis says, he was admitted an inhabitant there Oct. 3, 1662, but had then resided in the town several years. .... etc.

• .... No record appears of the deaths of Samuel and Lydia Hicks. They had at least seven children, two of whom, Dorcas born Feb. 14, 1652 and Margaret born Mar. 9, 1654, were born in Plymouth. Davis says, there was a son Samuel born in 1651 and Austin's Dictionary of Rhode Island Families gives a son Thomas, a carpenter of Dartmouth, Mass., and Portsmouth, R. I., who married Mary, daughter of John and Dorothy Albro. Margaret Hicks' will, dated July 8, 1655, bequeaths to her son Samuel and his family as follows : .... etc.

• 5 DANIEL2 DOANE (John1 ) was born probably at Plymouth, about 1636, and died at Eastham, Dec. 20, 1712, in the seventy-sixth year of his age. He was twice married. Nothing is known of his first wife. The marriage is not recorded on Eastham records. She doubtless was the mother of all the children, except the daughter Hepzibah. His second wife, whom he married after July 28, 1682, was Hepzibah Crisp, widow of George Crisp,(*) and daughter of Daniel and Mary Cole of Eastham. She was many years his junior, and survived him.

She married, in 1690, Samuel, born in England about 1620, second son of Rev. John Lothrop. From entries in Eastham town records, it is inferred that she was, to some extent, engaged in business. Her name appears several times on Eastham records as the owner of horses. Samuel Lothrop was married, first, by his father, at Barnstable Nov.28, 1644, to Miss Elizabeth Scudder, of whose death there is no record. He was a house carpenter by trade, combining with it extensive farming operations. In 1648 he went to New London, then called Pequot, where he built the " Second Church " and held positions of responsibilityand honor. In 1649 the General Court organized a local court at Pequot and Samuel Lothrop was one of the judges. In 1668 he removed to Norwich, where he is recorded as " Constable " and " Townsman," and where he died Feb. 29, 1700, leaving the widow Abigail who survived him manyyears.
