ABIHAILE WIGHT Generation 3

ABIHAILE WIGHT was born on the first of January, 1653/4, and was but an infant when her mother married Isaac Bullard and moved to Dedham. The little child figures in 1657 as one of the 41 proprietors of Medfield, in the right of her father, John Wight. She received, therefore, 38 acres when the New Grant in the present town of Medway was divided among Medfield proprietors in 1660. She is not, however, found among Medfield proprietors in the list made in 1675.

Ann Wight gave her daughter the Scriptural name of Abihaile, but this seems soon to have been modified. It has often been printed in a variety of forms such as Abiah, Abial, Abiel, etc. The best authority for the spelling of her name is herself. “Abiel” is the form she used. In five different cases she appeared with her husband as a grantor to a deed, and on every occasion she signed her name Abiel. Abiel married SAMUEL MANNING as his second wife on May 6th, 1673, at the age of twenty. He was born in 1644, the son of William Manning Jr. of Billerica, Massachusetts.
